What else can I feed my 6 month old to help with weight gain

I am really surprised they won't give the go-ahead for solids given he's six months old. Once a baby is eating cereal (not just in a bottle that is) and other stuff you can get a lot more creative with how you get calories into his diet... as you've figured out there is only so much you can get into a bottle.

The nutritionist is really dropping the ball as far as helping you here... he might need more enzymes; and he certainly can be trying other dietary options. It's not like he's only 2 months old and formula is the *only* option still available for all his calories, you know? <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> Insisting on this formula as a 'quick fix' bugs me too because what about once he's a little older and formula isn't the magic solution anymore? How innovative are they going to be then? *Frustrated for you, for them putting an unfair burden on YOU, to 'fix this' without giving you the tools you need to do so.*

My 6 month old is 15 lbs. 6 oz, and according to the CF clinic, not good enough even though he's consistantly gained weight. They say he's not gaining enough weight.

I give him 3 scoops of formula, 2 of rice cereal, per 5 oz of water. I have also been adding 1 tbsp of heavy cream to each bottle. Even after all of this, he only gained 10 ounces this last month.

I asked about putting him on solids and the answer was no. They say if he doesn't gain more than a pound by his next appointment, he has to go on pregestimil, which I have tried on him and he hates.

He takes 1 Creon 10 with every feeding. I'm afraid if I give him more to eat, the enzymes won't be sufficient. I'm getting no assistance from the clinic with suggestions as to how to help him bulk up. They keep saying the Pregestimil is the fix all, but he hates it.

What about Coconut Oil? Blending up regular food? Adding Butter?

HELP.

Dori, mom of Brett - 6 months CF, DF508/3359delC, Brandon 2 - CF Carrier.</end quote></div>

Our nutritionist told us to add dextrine maltose to my daughter's bottles, I think it is a kind of malt sugar or something. In Europe the manufacturer is Novartis. They also told us to put more spoons of formula into less water to pack more calories into the same amount of fluids.

Did they give a reason as to why they do not want him on solids?
If you could start him on solids I would suggest giving him avacado -its a very fatty food!

Have you thought about looking into a breastmilk bank. Breastmilk has more calories oz for oz thank formula. You could do 3 oz of breastmilk w/ a scoop of formula and that would have a TON of cals. (breastmilk is not like formula, most breastfed babies only eat 2-3 oz at a time b/c it does have more cals and fat. est. about 1 oz per hour of breastmilk)

My daughter does not have CF but does have weight gain issues. We started her on carnation instant breakfast around 10/11 months. It has 130 cals per 4oz. At her one year appointment she weighed 15lbs 11oz. HOWEVER they say a baby doubles birthweight by 4 months and triples it by one year (which she did - 4lbs 11oz at birth).

Hi Dori!
I have a 6 month old baby also and he weighs 16pounds even. He is close t the 75th percentile. They like CF patients to be above 50%, I don't see how your son can be that small! At this age they don't gain nearly as much weight as they use to and start to grow tall rather than out! He may need to increase his enzymes?

I honestly would not be that concerned at his young age unless he is below the 50th percentile!
