Our dietician said in a pinch you can always use ketchup (ick).

Honestly by 2.5 I was just opening the capsules and pouring it into my daughter's mouth. Then she took a swig of something she liked to drink -- here's where you can give her a shot of juice.

Shortly after 2.5 I taught my daughter how to swallow the pills whole. She does it great now. Its AWESOME to not deal with all those little beads anymore. Here's how I did it:

I went and got some wider straws (like the kind McDonald's uses) and put one pill in, then filled the straw with a favorite drink holding my finger on the top to keep it in. The pill floats to the top. Than I put it in her mouth, remove my finger and she sucked it all in and swallowed the pill whole. After a week or two, she didn't need the straw trick!!

My granddaughter just takes the pills whole. We were surprised at ten months my daughter just gave her one to see what she would do and she took it no problem. She is now 14 months old and still takes them before eating with no problems. Maybe just try it.

I have grandsons, ages 2 and 4 with CF. They both take the enzymes whole with a drink of water; the youngest just started doing this within the past month; he was 2 in April. I remember seeing a video clip on a CF site showing a 13 month old just taking them with a drink. When I talked to my daughter about it, she tried it with the oldest, last year and then just lately with the youngest. Sure solves a lot of problems and saves time.

My daughter didn't love applesauce either but we tried a few different kinds and she liked the Motts Healthy Harvest Mixed Berry. It cost more $ bc it only comes in the little indivual containers (6 pack) but it was worth it since it worked.

I have also used ketchup in desperate times (out to eat with no applesauce) and poured the beads straight into her mouth to swallow w water a few times too although that isn't really a good thing to do bc the coating on the beads can break down too soon without something acidic which can make them less effective and cause stomach aches.

I am going to email you another document on teaching kids to swallow capsules.
