So I have been on the site for a little over a week and I am hearing about hemoptysis and coughing up blood. I don't understand what the reason is behind the blood and what hemoptysis is. Can someone inform me...thanks,

I keep coming to answer this & get side tracked....so sorry. Hemoptysis is bleeding from the respiratory tract somewhere. For some of us its a real problem for others it never happens. Some of us can control it with Vitamin K & others need a procedure called Embolization which is a caterization of the bleeding area. Many of these bleeds are from infections, but not all. For me it can be triggered by infeciton, physical exertion (lifting mainly), too much caffein or hormones (period time). I have had hemoptysis since almost my dx, but some havent had their first bleed until later on. It can range from anything from a bit of streaks of blood in the sputum called streaking to full blown hemoptysis which is pure blood. Some of us get a gurgling sensation in our chest before it happens. When this happens to me it means that it will not be just streaking, but pure blood. Its not "normal", but definitely common. I have known non CFers who had pneumonia that have had it. The lungs can only handle so much stress before an area becomes "weak". Its not something you have to go around worrying about, but its good to know of if it does happen. If you have any other ???? feel free to ask!

Hey Melissa, I have a question. What does the extra vitamin k do ? Iv'e been having a little streaking the last couple of days, and hope it doesn't turn into a full blown hemoptysis again (a least i'm off of the blood thinners as of 3 days ago) We have vitamin k in our abdeks, isn't that enough ? and should vitamin k levels be checked often Thanks for any help..... Joni,

Vit K thickens the blood. I don't think the ADEK has enough to control the hemoptysis, in fact Vitamin K does not have enough, you can still have episodes of hemoptysis.

I was on Vit K pre tx for years, but then it was found to effect the liver, so I was switched to Mephyton. I think that is what most people are on. Ask your doctor if you can go on a small dose.

Vitamin K doesn't thicken the blood... it increases the blood's sed rate. So it clots faster. Vitamin K can increase the proportion of fibrinogen in the blood and causes red blood cells to stick to each other. The red cells form stacks called rouleaux which settle faster.

Often times you'll get hemoptasis not because of low vitamin K but because bacteria in your lungs eats away at your airways. Rigth below the airways, of course, are blood vessels because the purpose of the lungs is to get oxygen in the blood.

Is there anything that can be done to prevent lung bleeds from occuring, or at least lessen their severity. I'm thinking in terms of nutrition or supplements rather than meds. I've been lucky so far not to have this problem.

L-Lysine is the only supplement i have found that actually makes any difference. I contacted a woman i know who wrote about her son using it for his hemoptysis and after doing some research on it ,i started using it. It did make a difference.( But i still take Vit. K 10mg. on a daily basis too)
