what is the median age WITHOUT transplant

I've read that emphasema patients many times live longer without the transplant. They skew the numbers. There disease progresses much slower than other lung diseases. Also, do to their advanced age, they don't do as well with the transplant.

You know I hate to think that "on average" I only have 10 years left to live. I pay no attention to those averages and refuse to think that I apply to that. With all the improvements and such I think that those numbers can and will change. If I let myself believe that I only have so long to live and there is no hope because I have this disease then what is the point of living in the first place? I live my life my way and there is not an average for each individual person. So I'm planning on living to be 100 because I want to live life and not dwell on things that may or may not "on average" happen.

Ahh yes the median age or How long will
a person with Cf will Live.

The bloody truth is.

Nobody f***ing knows !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

All thoses stats are just that,,, no more than a Guess !!

I really hate to see thoses numbers, it is like the so called
smart people are setting a target for people with Cf and once you
hit it, thats it you should just die. I say BS, For Years I was waiting
to die because the docs said I was not going to live very long.
First it was, I wasen't going to make it to 18, then it was well not much
longer than 20 and so on. I spent my whole life waiting to die, Because
of all that crap. I didn't go to college because I thought I was going to die so
why bother. All my Life I have been waiting because of the median age of Death !

The Point is that with all the so called great minds working to come up with
these numbers of death. They Really Don't Know S H I T !!!!!

I am through now. Hope I didn't piss anybody off............

not at all.
I quite agree with you.

I only asked because they trot the numbers every year out to show how wonderful all of the new treatments and regimes are in order to raise more money.

But (cynic that I am) I got to wondering if the mean was higher because of new treatments and regimes or because more people were getting transplants.

I still don't hear the answer (don't quite get it).....

I think it is because of the new treatments. I'm not sure if the number of lung transplant recipents would change the median age that much. Keep in mind the median age is not the average it is the number has just as many people on both sides of that number. So for example out of 100 people 50 people are younger than 36.5 and 50 are older than 36.5 when they die.

I just rember 15 years ago the median age was 18.

Ahhhhhhh good old statistics. I'm taking that class now in my graduate program. Data can be misleading, messed with, and trumped up to support almost anything you want it to support.

You do have to define the parameters and with CF there are so many other illnesses that go hand in hand. They all can contribute to the mortality rate. The article someone mentioned only included Caucasian people. Yet we know this is not a Caucasian only disorder (my son is very black). The most useful stats would be those that include all CF patients. Than you start pulling out the sub-categories.

Most importantly as Brad and Nikki suggest live life to the fullest, don't live life as if you are dying because you have CF. We are all dying so live each day as it it were your last and tend to the things you would most regret not doing.
