What is wrong with my pediatrician?!

Claudette makes a really good point. When people ask who my primary care physician is, I always *want* to give them the name of my CF doc, because my PCP doesn't know sh*t about me. Especially if you compare her to my CF doc.

While you still need a pediatrician, always always <u>always</u> consult your CF doc when things pop up with Zoey. Even a very proactive intelligent pediatrician isn't going to be on top of the CF. You have to do it for them. Sad, I know. But start by finding a new pediatrician, I would agree that's a good idea.

I would be so upset with my pedia. to give my child something like that! And what a good mommy you are to be reading the 'fine print' about her medications!
I do the same, and probably drive our doctors crazy<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
I am a bit surprised that the pedi. didn't have the CF doctor in the loop while Zoey was in the hospital, espeically for as long as she was in.

I always call our CF doctor first when something comes up. He will then either have me bring her in or start an antibiotic based on symptoms and last sputum culture results. Once in a great while, like maybe once a year, he may tell me to take her by the ped. office to have her checked out since it's only 10 minutes away, and he always tells me which antibiotic he wants her own if the ped. feels she needs one. (I also keep all copies of sputum cultures and what she is and isn't resistant to)

I agree most CFers should never take a cough suppresent.. not good.. got to get the gunk out.. I do take Robatussin.. which thins the secretions but not supress the cough.. You just have to be careful which one you take..

I am not the normal CFer, and I have in the past quite often taken guaifensin which is Robatussin but I have had codeine in it. (which supress the cough) Sometimes my cough is non productive and it sounds like an annoying hack cough... and I can't stop the cough.. so they give it to me to shut me up and so I can get rest.. This is not the norm..

Aidan has also had high fevers since Sunday night. It is now Friday and I think finally we have the answer. Our Pedi told us it was a virus and to tough it out. Two days later Aidan could hardly swallow and I called the CF doctor. They did all kinds of bloodwork and believe it may be Epstein Barr Virus or a microbacteria that can't even be tested for. He stared Zithromax and should be feeling better within 48 hours. Thank God! Because he has been a mess, From now on - it is the CF doc first for our little one!

A couple of years ago Max got a rash and was kinda wheezing during the summer. Couldn't get him into the regular peds clinic, so DH took him to urgent care. Came home with a script for zyrtec, some ointment and prednisol (liquid prednisone), which I thought was a little over the top for a little rash, most likely caused by mosquito bites. So I called his CF doctor in the city and he said absolutely not. Shouldn't be messing with prednisone for something this minor, could screw up his blood sugars...

We've been told if Max develops a junky cough, to just call the CF doctor in the City. I don't have much faith in the local doctors and think if something major comes up, we may just have to hop in the car and drive 3 1/2 hours rather than deal with someone here.

I don't remember if Zoey has a PICC or not, but if she does her fever could be from an infected line. Just something esle to consider. I would be looking for a new ped as well.

Goes to show what many people on this board seem to not realize - your doctor isn't God. They make mistakes. And they don't have all the information about everything.

Those CFers and CF patients who pose questions to docs about therapies will have superior clinical outcomes than those that don't.

When Jaden gets sick I call the CF clinic who in turns calls out local ped, he sees Jaden then calls them back and they perscribe her meds. Local ped just looks at her and tells them what is going on and that is it, He never gives her meds. He is a good guy and has been great to us through everthing.
