Solo, not sure. I think I'm lucky too. My FEV1 has been like this my whole life. Never been in the hospital for CF, either. Docs say it's "mild" but I'm hesitant to go that route

Since I turned 30, I've noticed it is a bit harder to clear myself out. i've taken on running as a lifestyle choice, ie it's a non -negotiable. I run half marathons and 10Ks and basically look at it as my ticket to a long and healthy life.

One more thing. I'm 5"3 and 130 pounds. Always make sure I'm eating a high protein diet, lots of butter and cheese. Makes for happy lungs (but I don't need to tell you that). I have to take enzymes, but I don't seem to stuggle with keeping weight on either.</end quote>

I have a struggle to keep weight on lately. Thanks for the tip on lots of butter and cheese!

My FEV1s are usually around 40%....anywhere from 34-42 depending on how I feel.
I use oxygen in the hospital when I sleep but when Im home I cant sleep with it because of the noise.

<begin quote>Originally posted by: Melissa75 -because a tall person has bigger lungs than a short person. </end quote>

Thanks. That's exactly what I thought. Because I'm rather short, and like others have said, exercise does play a crucial role in your FEV1 score. I don't go out and exercise deliberately, but I do work alot, and it involves alot of walking and lifting. Plus I park my car really, really far away.
Shane, being shorter allows for your raw scores (in liters) to be lower, but the percent scores are corrected for height/age. If you are saying you are a long-legged guy though, then I see what you're saying.

If you can, I would recommend deliberately exercising. I experienced the best two yrs of a decade when I started doing 3 hours of cardio dance a week. Then I started rock climbing last fall. I loooooove it. So much that I gradually switched to 2-3 hrs of rock climbing a week and only 30 min to one hour of purposeful cardio. After a few months of that routine and a bronchitis sinus infection, my left lung is consistently soupy again. I am back to the old routine of PT, acapella, albuterol btw symbicort--stuff I'd been able to ditch for a while. And the two yrs prior I had had exacerbations, but I cleared them out.
So, I am adding the dance back, minimum of two hrs a week, rock climbing has to be reduced to 1-2 hours. There is just nothing like panting heavily for lung clearance, I guess.

Wow, this thread is really interesting to me. Thank you all for sharing. For those of you with high fev1s, if you don't mind answering...

1) did you ever or do you culture pseudomonas or staph or any other bacteria?
2) do you have milder mutations?

Thank you,
Edan

1.) I have psuedomonas (since I was 12) and I also have MRSA! But it doesn't seem to affect my FEV

2.) I don't know if my mutations are "mild" but they are, as the geneticists say, "unusual" for CF. ( you can see them in my sig)

3.) I also believe in the power of modifier genes
