What makes kids with CF such picky eaters?

Sheridan,

My daughter does not really like sweet things either and I often wonder if it's cause her mouth itself is salty. I know this sounds wierd but once I ate an apple after my daughter with CF had slimed it with her own saliva and said she was done. I took a bite out of the apple and it tasted salty from her saliva!! It did not taste the way a green apple usally tastes. Just thought that was interesting.

My son is not big on sweets either. Definately not a cookies or cake kind of kid. He wants chips, popcorn, crackers, etc. Salty snacks.

My daughter 5 isn't super picky but she doesn't really enjoy trying new foods. We usually make her try them anyway and she often really likes them. However, she just doesn't have much of an appetite, even for things she really likes. My son is 2 and he eats 2-3 times as much as she eats. She will be excited all day long about eating cake at a birthday party, then after she takes 2-3 bites she is done!

We have to sneak in extra calories and fat thankfully she will drink milk so sneak lots in there.

Oh ya, salt tooth, lol! She definately has one of these. She loves cruchy salty and would live on potato chips if we let her!

Hi.

Though I've gotten over it, when I was a kid I steered away from fatty foods and high calorie snacks. Instead, I preferred sorbet to ice cream, lettuce and mayonaisse sandwiches to anything with substance, and skittles to chocolate.

I no longer do any of that and go right to the high calorie stuff. But, in retrospect, the reason for this was simple. My body was not geared to process things with fat in it. A lack of natural enzymes to process food will make digestion really painful and difficult.

Now I make sure to up the amount of enzymes that i take with each mail to be in proportion to what I'm eating. I have a very healthy BMI (I'm 5'3 and about 130 pounds) and try to maintain that. I no longer have any problem gaining and maintaining weight.

My advice to you would be to just make sure your child has enough enzymes with each meal, so that they have no problem digesting things. They will come around!!!
