What makes kids with CF such picky eaters?

That is so funny that you all have CFers that don't like sweets! My daughter will eat very few sweets. We even have a hard time getting her to drink the free carnation milk we get grom CREON because it is vanilla, chocolate or strawberry flavored.

She loves popcorn, chips and pretzels!

I wonder if it is because they have such salty saliva? That is a good question!

I think so much can affect this. First lets start with if we are actually fighting a flareup. Decrease in 02 will decreased your appetite automatically. That is a given.

Now lets talk on a day to day basis with no flareups. IHMO all the meds, coughing, aftertastes from bacterias in our mucous etc all alter the taste & even texture of foods. If it doesnt taste right, feel right or doesnt "hit the spot" then its difficult to get it down.

There have been countless times that I cant figure out what I want to eat. I am starving, but cant just put "anything" in me because it will get wasted no matter how hungry I am.

Its frustrating!! Especially when weight is always a worry. I wish I was more of a junk food eater at times just so I would snack my empty calories versus no calories!

BTW you notice that its not just a kid thing (tho that adds to it <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">)

The bigger an issue is to a parent, the more a kid will fight it. It's all about control. Certainly with some kids there might be a medical reason but for many picky eaters, it's often because it makes the parent crazy when they don't eat and most CF parents (understandably) try too hard to "get" their kids to eat right. We become a short order cook.

The answer? Don't make it an issue. Offer them well balanced meals with things they like. Only give them snacks and treats when they eat properly and above all: Do NOT show any frustration around food issues. (That doesn't mean you don't feel frustrated, just don't show it). We have some good articles about this on www.ParentingChildrenWithHealthIssues.com.

Our kids are both very good eaters and are in high percentiles for weight because we started with this approach early on. Toddlers naturally go through picky periods and that's where it all begins...

Good luck!
