i use a 22 gage 3/4 inch needle, i always use my port for blood draws. I had my first port for 11 years and hve had my new one for bout 2yrs now however my port is located on my left lower rib. I dont have much trouble with mine except that the port moves during access due to the stiches that holds it in place have broke and disolved

Well YAY!! is all I can say. We had to reaccess the port today because it just stopped flowing when I was taking my med. The nurse had no choice but to reaccess. She reaccessed with a 22 gauge 3/4" needle. It is working perfectly now. Blood return is amazing, the flow is great and I am not having discomfort when it is flushed. When it was first accessed I was getting pain and lightheaded every time it was flushed no matter how slow we flushed it.

The assumption is that it wasn't accessed properly the first time. Or that the needle was not positioned properly.

Well I am one happy camper now- not to mention that I got to take a shower without the port being accessed and having to cover that mess up.

Thanks everyone for your experiences on this I appreciate it.

Take Care,
Lindsey

I use a 22 guage. My port is in my chest and I use a 3/4 inch needle. Mine seems to go slow sometimes. And it doesn't always give blood.
Good luck with yours, I hope the sensitivity goes away and it's more comfortable for you soon!

Glad to hear it works better for you now. I ask the nurse to be careful when flushing because if it's too fast I get light headed, or worse, I can taste the medication. Yuck yuck yuck! I'm glad you got to take a shower without all that gunk on you to protect it.

If you want to be nice and discreet about the tubing when it's attached to you but not attached to the meds, I recommend picking up a little bandeau bra. They're not much for support, but it makes for a handy little "pocket" for the tubing. Helps keep me warm when I go for chest x-rays too <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
