What to do for ALLERGENS

So our transplant docs recommended a clean house, wood floors, good ventalation system, ect. post transplant. We asked for advise on this, and they said it is good to be OCD. So now my husband is compulsive about everything we need to get... haha.

We are buying a new mattress set for Christmas and was curious if anyone has a hyperallergenic one of their own? They look pretty expensive, so I may just purchase covers.

What do you do to protect yourself from allergins, dust mites, ect. living in your home that could be harmful to the new lungs?

Does anyone have a humidifier and does it help? What are some other things you are doing?

I may post this on the adult forum as well... I am very curious!

Hey Trizzanne, how is it going?? We have wood floors, and it is great. I mop with white vinegar and H20. If you have carpet or wood floors under carpet, I would recommend tile or wood over carpet even pre-transplant. I also have an air purifier by my bed. We have no curtains in the house. We were able to find nice blinds that are static resistant and don't collect dust. I have a mildew proof shower curtain, hypo-allergenic pillow. there are aso some really nice systems you can put directly on your heating and air system to purify the air. We don't have one of those. I would not recommend a humidifier, they can be a breading ground for bacteria. I do have a humidifier with a black light in it that supposedly kills 99% of bacteria, however, I do not use it much. There are also a lot of green cleaing products instead of the harsh chemicals. That all being said, I am not the worlds best house keeper<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> That would probably help. We also have an adorable guinea pig, he's probably not too clean. Another thing I have heard is get rid of the stuffed animals, I don't remember if you have kids. This is something I should probably do. Since I saw your post, I'll remember to send some prayers up for you tommorow when I play on the worship team. Love ya!

Hi there,

Well I was much more OCD at first post transplant than I am now. I actually had my mom go buy me a new mattress set and sheets and new pillows in the weeks after my transplant - while I was still hospitalized. I never had the chance to sleep on them nasty and sick and hacking crap up. I did have a mattress cover for allergens and pillow covers that we washed in a sanititation cycle through our washer before making the bed. I got a NEW stuffed animal post transplant to help me sleep as I had the same one for 17 years that I always slept with. I have stopped sleeping with it now, but still have handful of stuffed animals in my room that I refuse to part with.

I wash my sheets every week through a sanitation cycle. I change my toothbrush every month, wash my hands obsessively. I have hand sanitizer at the entrance to EVERY room in the house along with sanitation wipes for the counters and things like that.

As far as cleaning goes. I wear a mask when I dust, do dishes, vaccuum and such. Typically my center reccomends that someone ELSE cleans the bathrooms and things that involve harsh chemicals to clean. They said that if it was a must that I clean that I buy simply green or something along those lines that is more natural.

I also have started using sinus rinses post transplant which help alot with my allergies - that may be something you want to look into. It has also helped me to keep my sinus issues under control and keep my cultures clear (dispite post nasal drip).

Initially I removed most everything from my room - that way there was less to collect dust. As time has passed I have unpacked the boxes that we packed up the day I was called and that they packed up while I was in the hospital post. I have probably too much junk in my room, but dust frequently and vaccuum often. My mom cleans the bathroom every week as well.

The only thing I think I am obsessive about now is my towels and my toothbrush. I will change my tooth brush every few weeks if I can just because I feel better by doing it. Also I change my towels every few days instead of every week like I used too.

I was also told to be wary of animals - no touching fish or fish food. NO - NO NO birds because they just go out in the open and the stuff gets into the vent systems. I have 4 cats and a dog, but was told cats were a no no as well. I have done fine I just do not have much to do with the maintenance for the cats - i.e. litter box emptying and cleaning and such.

I think you will be fine - at first be hypervigilent then as time passes you will realize what works for YOU. Somethings may need mroe attention for you than for me - meaning you may need to dust every few days where I dust every week or even every other week and I am fine. Whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Have a great day.
