What would you do?

This is a horrible situation.

I am 6 months pregnant, and a friend of mine has another friend who is pregnant and about as far along. Also, my husband had CF, which is why my friend told me the following information:

My friend's friend (FF) smokes a pack a day and has made no move to stop this since finding out she was pregnant. Then, she found out that she and her husband are both carriers for CF, so they had amniocentesis and found out the baby has CF for sure. She is still smoking a pack a day.

When my friend told me this I was irate. To smoke while pregnant is so horrible anyway, but to bring a CF baby into a smoking home is unthinkable to me. I told my husband about this and he said, "Well, she's going to have to quit." But if being pregnant wasn't enough of an incentive to quit, why would this be?

I feel like her doctors must not have talked to her about CF enough, as so many people don't really know about it. My friend asked me what she should do, because I am pregnant and have a CF spouse, but I don't even know what to say. My husband was so angry he pointed out that babies are routinely taken out of homes because they are "too dirty" or "unsafe" for some reason, but that smoking while you raise a child isn't grounds- but with a CF baby it should be!

It's none of my business how someone else raises their child, but even though I don't know this woman I feel a moral obligation to do SOMETHING. What can I do?

My Mom smoked while pregnant & all during my life. She gave up smoking almost a year ago (will be one year in June) after her COPD got bad enough.

I dont know what you say to someone. Its a tough call. I guess if you dont mind the riff it might cause then just say what you feel.

Hopefully they will come to their senses, but your husband needs to realize that might not happen <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

I'm probably going to get hammered for this but...

It drives me nuts that these are the kind of irresponsible people that can have children without the headaches. I dot my i's and cross my t's and nothing after 3 years. Then you have this sorry excuse of a mom-to-be who gets pregnant like it's nothing and continues smoking. To me it's obvious that she doesn't hold much value to human life. If she was going to continue smoking, why even bother to find out if the baby was going to have CF or not??? It doesn't seem to matter to her as far as she's concerned...It's just a joke, I guess...

I spent many times in the hospital when I was younger and saw lots of kids with CF who had parents that smoked...Usually their own health suffered. According to respiratory therapists, children who have smoking parents don't do as well as those whose parents don't.

I feel horrible for the unborn child...He/She already has odds stacked against him/her. If the mom can't even stop smoking, I doubt highly she will do breathing treatments...I feel absolutely horrible for that unborn child...

There really isn't anything you can do. The parents will do what they want and won't listen to anyone until they want to, whenever that may be...

Here's an idea...How about having Jenny write a letter to this woman telling of her cf struggles for she and her sis. Also her struggles to have a child. How despirately she and her husband want to be parents. And how they will gladly adopt the woman's baby and provide so much more than just a smoke free home.
