When did you get / start IV Antibiotics...

I've only done IV antibiotics once, and I requested it. In November of last year I got mono then and a secondary lung infection. I did 2 weeks of oral antiobiotics and was feeling pretty good. But not long after I finished the meds I had to have my appendix removed. Going under general anaestisia so soon after being sick took a lot out of me. I was tired all the time, short of breath, and coughing up nasty thick green sputum. So I asked for the IVs. I knew with the way I was feeling that another round of oral abx wasn't going to cut it.

Wow, thanks for all the great replies and detailed information. It does sound like "tune-up" really is a misnomer. I'm beginning to understand the rationale behind it now.

Part of my late DX is that recurring "What if" thought at the back of my mind - the one where I question what if I had known I had CF sooner? Would I have been on IV ABX and perhaps preserved more of my lung function? It sounds like at least to the IV ABX question an earlier DX probably wouldn't have made any difference since I haven't been in the situation where I've needed anything more that oral ABX at this point. Thanks! And if anyone else has more to add, please do so. ~Juliet

Just wanted to say, this sounds about right. I wasn't originally 100% clear on why you were asking about this. I got the late dx thing, I just wondered what the rationale behind asking was. Now that I'm clearer on it (and you probably said it before, I was just being a numbskull), I think that's a very accurate conclusion you've come to. IVs wouldn't have helped you any, because if you had needed them, CF dx or not, you would've known. If the oral abx have been working, then you're good. Again, CF dx or not.

And I know this is easier said than done by a long shot, but don't worry about the what ifs... it'll drive you batsh*t insane. Hah. I knew I had CF when I was 2 days old... but the gene wasn't discovered until I was 5. What if it had been discovered sooner? ...But Pulmozyme wasn't out until I was 9 years old. What if it had come out earlier? You know. Even those of us who've known could do that stuff and it's lame. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0"> I understand the natural urge to do it... but... don't. lol

Hey Emily, I hear you about not trying to make oneself insane with the What If's. That wasn't the primary intent of my Q. It was the nagging at the back of my mind intent. I really am curious when (if?) I might get subjected to the IV treatment.... hopefully NOT in the hospital but at home when I get to that point! Ack. Weeks in the hospital would be a major monkey wrench in my schedule. But having just been at a family get together where the conversations these days always end up on the CF subject (as if there's nothing BETTER to talk about!!)... well... you know, the what If's reared their ugly head.... You do bring up good points with your What If Qs!!!
