When is a Port suggested?

Why does my doctor make me stay to get a PICC placed? Overnight is what I'm hoping for this tuneup, but generally I have to stay the whole weekend! He knows that I have a job and stuff! Is this because I live 3 hours from the hospital that places the PICC!? I do have a hospital in my town!

Sorry for hijacking the thread and the venting. My husband has been out of town and when he comes home again he will be only staying one night and I have my two boys to try to line up care for. I'm just frustrated. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

I got my port fitted because my veins were practically non-exsistent and i could never get a line in and when i did it hardly lasted.
Its in my arm under the skin and i don't notice it at all and noone even strangers have ever asked or commented on it.
It makes ivs so much less hassle and virtually pain free and i get blood taken from it too.

I have had 3 or 4 now i've lost count but the one i have now has lasted about 4 years and counting. The procedure to put them in isn't so bad either.

I would definitely recommend them.

A lot of it had to do with the schedule of the IV team and also getting everything set up for home IV meds before they would release me. One time I actually was released the same day, but usually it turned into a stay of several days before everything was set and they would let me out. It was always pretty frustrating to me as well.

And, as far as these 15-minute PICC line placements. . .nothing like that ever happened for me!

Usually I have IV meds every few months at least, but if getting PICCs is as much of a challenge for you as it was for me, I'm not so sure I wouldn't go for the port even if it's not used as often.
