When needing a picc?

I guess I didn't question why they put a peripheral line in when I was just in (for blood clot in first PICC vein).

Thanks to your post, I now know that it was the weekend & the PICC team was MIA.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0"> I just figured they were too busy. Hmmm...

Bottom line is it is not profitable to staff a team of people to be at the hospital over the weekend that may or may not be utilized.

PICC lines are never an emergency as there are several other ways to infuse medication, TPN, etc.

I know it is annoying as anything but I totally understand it. Part of why I got a PORT is so I wouldn't have to put up with this..

I am part of an on call system for the weekend now, and I get called in if a patient is having a heart attack and needs an intervention.. There is no one at the Cath lab, we are all reachable by beeper..so if they are not going to have us on campus for people having heart attacks, I don't see them doing it for PICCs either.. (though again if someone is having a heart attack we all have 30 minutes to get to the hospital)

I get paid a small fee to carry the beeper and only get paid the big bucks if I get called in....

Again with PICCs etc, hospitals are not willing to put out for something that is non emergent..

I am sorry that things are stinky.. I hope it gets worked out soon...

Our hospital has an interventional radiology team that is on call on weekends. They will only come in if a patient really needs a PICC- cannot have IV access any other way. There are suprisingly few circumstances in which I have seen a picc placed on a weekend. If it is absolutely necessary it will be done though.
