When to change your CF clinic?

Thanks everyone. I do everything I can to keep my daughter healthy and I dont want her Dr to not have the same perservance and determination to keep her healthy. The UAB Dr. called me on the weeekend, that says alot to me. But I am going to talk to both clinics before we change, just becasue of the 3 1/2 hr drive.

We actually drive 3 1/2 hours for our clinic. We still have a local doctor who is part of the cf clinic, but we no longer go to the cf clinic here. Once we made that decision and spoke with our doctor in the city about our decision, we felt much more comfortable, much more at ease. We've found that the clinic in the city is only a phone call away. The respond in a timely manner and even if they don't have an answer they call to let us know that they will get back to us soon.

However, my son sees an specialist that is a good 3hrs+ away, and for excellent care with a dr I trust at a hospital I feel comfortable with (he's been inpatient for prolonged stays a couple times) ...it is SO worth it. Being close to home has it's conveniences, but NOTHING can make up for substandard care.

For those of you far from clinic: what do you do if you/your child gets sick between clinic visits? Do you handle it all by phone call? What if the doctor needs to see you/your child, or wants a sputum culture to see what's going on? Do you go to your clinic, or go somewhere more local, at least for the testing?
