Thanks everyone. I do everything I can to keep my daughter healthy and I dont want her Dr to not have the same perservance and determination to keep her healthy. The UAB Dr. called me on the weeekend, that says alot to me. But I am going to talk to both clinics before we change, just becasue of the 3 1/2 hr drive.

We actually drive 3 1/2 hours for our clinic. We still have a local doctor who is part of the cf clinic, but we no longer go to the cf clinic here. Once we made that decision and spoke with our doctor in the city about our decision, we felt much more comfortable, much more at ease. We've found that the clinic in the city is only a phone call away. The respond in a timely manner and even if they don't have an answer they call to let us know that they will get back to us soon.

We don't deal with a 3+hr commute for Emily's cf care- more like 60-90min depending on traffic. However, my son sees an specialist that is a good 3hrs+ away, and for excellent care with a dr I trust at a hospital I feel comfortable with (he's been inpatient for prolonged stays a couple times) ...it is SO worth it. Being close to home has it's conveniences, but NOTHING can make up for substandard care.

My daughter's clinic has always been local, but we'll be switching to a clinic that is farther away (since her doc just left). For those of you far from clinic: what do you do if you/your child gets sick between clinic visits? Do you handle it all by phone call? What if the doctor needs to see you/your child, or wants a sputum culture to see what's going on? Do you go to your clinic, or go somewhere more local, at least for the testing?

We do DS' labs locally -- annual bloodwork and sputum/throat cultures and have the info sent to the clinic in the city. Usually time it a couple weeks prior to going to the City for a regular CF check. When DS has gotten sick, I've called the clinic in the City and have gotten a prescription sent to the pharmacy based on past cultures. Unlike our local CF clinic -- they actually call us back!

A couple years ago ds was vomiting, not stooling, was in pain so we took him to the local ER. They determined he had an obstruction, but based his complicated issues with meconium illeus as an infant, his doctor down there wanted us to head to the Children's Hospital in the city where they have SEVERAL pediatric surgeons instead of just the one at our local hospital. So we packed a bag and the next morning headed to the City.
