When to change your CF clinic?

Hi, we got a new Dr. at our clinic and I was very fond of our past Dr. I haven't had good communication with our new Dr.  ( mostly due to not talkign directly to her) but then I read a very good article from UAB's CF clinic ( Dr. Rowe). Does anyone have any feelings about changing from Nemours in Pensacola with Dr. Barbara Stewart to UAB for better care? Or does anyone anything about Dr. Stewart? I just want the best care for my daughter. Thanks

We recently change from Nemours in Pensacola to Shands in Gainesville. We LOVED the other Dr. but when she left we felt like we weren't getting the best care. We never saw or talked to Dr. Stewart so I don't know much about her. So far we love Shands and we feel that the longer drive is worth it for better care. If our insurance would have covered it we would have probably changed to UAB (we heard great things about them also).

Thanks, we graduated from UF, but had just heard good things about UAB. I haven't checked about our insurance. We loved Dr. VH also<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> How old is your child?

I have changed CF doctors before and it was the best decision I made. Being that we rely so much on our CF doctors and see them so frequently, it's necessary that you have a good relationship with them. If you don't 'click' for some reason then it's probably good if you switch and find the right one for you.

I don't live in your area so don't know the specific drs under discussion here... but along the lines of what Leah above tells you- the lack of communication with the new dr would set off a red flag would me. We DO rely so much on our cf teams when it comes to the health of our child and being as proactive as possible in their care. If we rarely see the dr and talking to him/her is so difficult, we're missing out on a vital piece of what makes our clinic of choice the BEST possible one for our child. I wish you the best in your decision.

When DS was a baby we spent 4 weeks in the NICU at a children's hospital. Great communication with staff, very proactive. There was a binder kept by ds' bedside that we were encouraged to read each day with doctor, nurse, rt & dietician notes as well as lab reports. Rude awakening when we went home and ds spent two weeks at the local hospital. We were kept out of the loop in terms of lab results, we were TOLD what formula ds was going to be switched to -- pregistil, which soooo didn't work for him in the city. Just a totally different vibe.

And CF clinic -- we were very concerned with the potential for cross contamination, the pulmonologist spoke down to me, scold me, try to scare me in one breath and the next breath would lecture us because he thought ds was on too many medication and we shouldn't have to do CPT yet. I'd get physically ill prior to clinic days due to stress. One day after cooling our heels in the tiny waiting room for 45 minutes before being put in an exam room for another hour before seeing anyone -- we walked out, never to return.
