Where were you when.....?

This evening I was having a discussion about where people are when either a famous person died, or a major event occurred. I was kind of surprised that I remember exactly where I was when Elvis died, as I was seven at the time and didn't really pay attention to him. I was in our kitchen and it was the afternoon. Some neighbors had come over and we about to play miniature golf. It was announced on the radio and then they played Elvis songs. We did go play miniature golf afterwards.

I'd be interested to know other people's memories of where they were when a famous person died, or a major event happened. Doesn't even have to necessarily be a sad or tragic event, though those tend to stand out.

I was watching NBC30 at the Sheraton at Bradley Field in Windsor Locks (Hartford), Connecticut---I believe watching SNL---when Princess Di died. I HATE it when TV is interrupted for a special report. Still scares the heck out of me.

I was exiting CA Highway 52 onto Ardath Road in San Diego when news broke on B100 (KFMB 100.7, now Jack FM) when Challenger exploded. I was headed to The Children's School.

I was grocery shopping in Ross Twp., PA when I saw folks crowded around a TV on 11 Sep 2001. I forget if it was Kmart or Giant Eagle.

I remember the day of 9/11 like it was yesterday. I was coming home from Northampton Community College, just walked in my front door, and my father's eyes were preposterously glued to the television. This epic catastrophe was broadcast on every single station-even the weather channel. The next day at school everyone looked crudely grim, and they had a long prayer session. Needless to say, that day cemented my taking notice in politics; it was a day I will never forget.

I was in my Junior high English class when the Challenger exploded- I remember that we had the tv in our classroom for some reason (it may have been to watch the shuttle re entry, come to think of it-duh), and some of the boys started laughing and joking like it was fireworks, instead of the Space shuttle, that just exploded and our teacher yelling at them to shut up- people just died.

I also remember when the second plane hit on 9/11- I had been standing in front of the tv, watching NBC, and finally made a run to the bathroom (figures) about a milisecond before the second plane hit. When I came back about 20 seconds later, they were exclaiming about what just happened. I think I'm thankful I missed seeing it live.

I also remember all the people stranded at the airport that day, and the news stories about all the strangers lining up in the pickup/drop off lane at the airport to come and take them home with them until the flights resumed. And my sister was in Los Vegas for a work training seminar on 9/11- all the way across the country from us. My BIL and dad almost drove out there to get her.
