i agree that everyone's different, but i HAVE been told (by medical professionals) that for some unexplained reason, many cf patients who struggle more with digestion have fewer lung complications, and vice versa.

and, as your whole body is affected and different systems affect one another, i've also been told that patients who maintain a healthy body weight - with proportionate body fat - have a better lung prognosis. that's why they're always harping on us to keep our weight up.

I definitely have to agree with the 'everyones different.' Personally for me, I am relatively mild in both lung and digestive disease, but I know that will be probably degenerate over time. This disease is soooo complex and so different with everyone who has it, that there is NO way you could predict the severity of one portion of the disease to another. What may be true for one person, may not be true for the next.

However...Loveee is definitely correct in this respect. I have been told that many times by the doctor, and have noticed a difference when my weight goes down and I get sick. It may not be that noticable, but its still something different to think about.

That is interesting....I will definitely have to read more about that as far research goes...love to do that stuff!!. The way I have seen it at least with this board and with some reading is that everyone with CF behaves differently. Some have just pancreatic problems while mainaining a really good lung function, some are the opposite, some are diagnosed after having chronic pancreatitis, some are because of severe sinus issues but have great pancreatic and lung function. Some have liver issues, alot of us have combo problems....you get my point. Severity differs, characteristics differ it is just as individual as you or I. I think alot of docs are realizing that we don't all fit into the same shoebox (at least my regular pulmo (who doesn't deal with my CF) is figuring that out- I am not typical by anymeans and it sounds like alot of you are like that too) Hugs Jenn <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

It was once explained to me that people w/ pancreas insufficiency are considered more severe CF, mainly on the Class scale of mutations. But mutations and classes do not help much with telling how much lung issues someone will have. U can be pancreatic sufficent and have terrible lungs, which is really the most serious. Because u need your lungs to breath, where as with the pancrease u can almost do w/o, enzymes and insulin. I do think there is something to pancreatic insufficency and diabeties though, but I don't think this has been proven.

And yes I have heard that about maintaining a healthy weight and lung function, they get really upset when you drop too low. Haven't had the gain weight speech yet, but have been lectured when I drop the weight too fast while ill. Hugs again, Jenn<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Exactly, Brad. And even if there was a book, the CF genes can't read! They don't know how to obey the rules <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

we all know everyone is different; scientists (and some of us) are just looking for very general patterns in order to make predictions, prognosises, etc...
