a bathtub whirlpool is perfectly fine. You put new fresh water in every time you use it. A hot tub is quesitonable. We have one in our yard, and haven't used it this year at all. If its your own and you keep good control of the chemicals, its not really a problem, but public hot tubs are a bad, bad idea -- for anyone. Google "hot tub lung" and you'll never go in one again.

There was a study I read a long time ago about how the jets in whirlpool bathtubs can accumulate bacteria, mold, etc. being that water sits inside them. I'm sure you were given instructions on cleaning, etc. I thought the article talked about running water or cleaning solution thru it to keep the jets clean.

I know a relative looked at getting one at their lake home and decided not to based on the amount of water that needed to be run thru it on a regular basis for cleaning/maintenance.
