Who Performs an IUI?

Did those of you who had an IUI have the procedure done by your OBGYN or did you have to go to a fertility clinic?

Did you take fertilty drugs before hand? Which one(s)?

I'm going to my first doctor's apt on Friday to discuss our next step toward having a baby (since trying the old fashion way just isnt' working! Arrghh). I've decided that I want to have an HSG; Not so much for the test its self, but it seems from what I've read that a 'side effect' is it can clear out any mucous from your tubes, etc.

After that I want to try an IUI. I'm not sure if I want to use fertility drugs because I don't think ovulation is a problem for me (my chart's seem fairly normal). But I'm not apposed to ruling it out.

..we'll see if my doctor take's my advise!

Hi Kortney,

I did IUI at my Reproductive Endocrinologists office. First my OB ordered the HSG. I think that is standard operating procedure before referral to an RE. I know there are some OBs that do IUIs too. Mine didn't. I'm glad I saw the RE though because we discovered undiagnosed advanced stage IV endometriosis.

The HSG won't clear any mucus from your fallopian tubes, it's my understanding there is no mucus there, (correct me if I'm wrong???) but it will clear mucus from the cervix. I had that hope too, that the HSG cycle would bring me a natural pregnancy. It didn't, but there are many CFers that use all sorts of fertility assistance to get pregnant naturally. If you combine some of those techniques during the HSG cycle, you may get lucky. It does happen for those lucky ones. Others (like me) need further assistance. I ended up going the IVF route and it worked on the first try. (one of those lucky few again)

Good luck Kortney. Check back in when you can. Let us know how it's going.

Thanks Tara.

So did you even attempt an IUI when they realized you had endometriosis? Or did they just determine IVF was the best alternative? I have read just a little about IVF it seemed like the cost was very similar to actually adopting a baby (I could be wrong).

It is amazing the options they have for those of us who need a little medical attention in this area!

I had an IUI (2 actually) done by my OB.

First my hubby had an SA (No point in IUI if he's shooting blanks); then I had an HSG - they do want to rule out any scarring, etc and no, you don't have mucous in your tubes, but an HSG does "clear out" the tubes. For us CFers it seems the problem is often more the thickness of our CM, which an HSG will do nothing for.

Anwya, after that we did three cycles of clomid, starting at 50 mg. We did that cycle and we did an HSG shot with timed intercourse and no IUI. Didn't work. I believe we then did the same thing at 100mg of clomid. Didn't work. FInally we did 150 mg of clomid with an HSg and an IUI and we got pregnant. Sadly, that pregnancy ended in miscarriage. We waited one cycle and then did the same routine again and got pregnant again and that baby is now 14 months.

Hope that helps. I;m open to any questions! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
