Wow, it sounds like Reece and my daughter are in the same boat. She was on and off oral antibiotics during the fall and then admitted for 2 weeks in January. Five days after getting home, she got a cold and I kind of attributed the cough to that, well the cough is still here so now she's on bactrim for 21 days and will hopefully be healthy enough to do Disney in 3 weeks. She also does not eat well and the doctor said if her weight stays up, her lungs will function better. So we, try to talk to her and let her know how important it is to eat. I'm sure most of it is too complicated for her, she is only three. I also hate CF, what a pain in the behind it is. I'm in the process of looking for a new job and I know nobody will want to hire me when I tell them that I'll probably miss 2 or more weeks a year for hospital stays and days when she is too sick to take to daycare, trips to the cf doctor, etc. My current employer is very understanding and never questions my absences, but we are moving 3 hours away and I obviously can't stay there. Uggghhhhh!!!!! I never figured our lives would be this complicated. Wow, looks like I needed to vent too.

Hi, I'm Ceci, 17 w/cf Daughter of Alyssa. I just thought i'd offer up my 2 cents. Have you tried having your son wear face masks? I started wearing them a few months ago, when I go to school or the movies, anywhere that i'm going to be in close quarters with people, sick or not. It has made an obvious difference for me, especially during these winter months when everyone seems to get sick. I've been sick twice this winter, both pretty mild fights. Last few winters though, just seemed like I would get sick over and over again. They do make kids masks, they have patterns like stars and things on them. They really do help filter the bugs, and perhaps if his body can get a chance to let down it's guard and heal (without the extra bombardment of other bugs), he will.

I wish you luck and peace.

Best wishes to you and your son,

Ceci

Leah,
I just wanted to let you know that I feel the exact same way.
Andrew just went back into the hospital (6 months old, 3rd hospital stay) and sometimes I feel like I'm not doing a good enough job. It's like the rational side of you knows you are doing the best you can for them, but then there is this little nagging side that just keeps making you feel like your not.
Sometimes I think the doctors must think I'm not doing a good job, though they have told me time and again that it's not my fault, I just can't help these stupid thoughts.
I've been through a lot in my 30 years of life, but nothing, nothing, nothing, is worse than having your child go through such horrible things. So, often I wish I could just trade places with him, I wish so much that he could just come out of there perfect.

Hi Momma to reece:

I am a 44yr old c.f. woman and I will share this with you i learned from the c.f. director's secty (from one of the CHOC cf clinics). She once told me that little kids (and some adults) are always putting their fingers in their nose. That deadly bacteria we catch stays under the fingernails and will be back to strike once it is pulled out of the nail and inhaled again.

You might want to check your child's fingernails, keep them very trim so no dirt can embed in and under the fingernail.

This was foudn to be the main reason for some lung transplants failure. The children after having the transplant had bacteria in a fingernail and recontaminated herself and ended up dying.

I thought this may be a good hint for you to check on yr child's fingernails and keep them clean and washed all the time as we do know unconsciously chldren do put their fingers in their nose.

I am sorry , so srry for your stress, I KNOW WHAT YOU MEAN BY HATING C.F. I hate it too. I wish my body would just drop but it doesnt .

WHAT KEEPS ME GOING IS JESUS!...pls remember that faith the size of a mustarad seed moves mountains.

Leah,

I don't have any really useful advice unfortunately, but just wanted to remind and encourage you that this has nothing to do with you or your skills as a parent. By a standard, most toddlers spend toddlerhood getting sick. Not that it's any reassurance, but rather it's normal. Throw CF in to the mix and you've got a yucky situation, but by NO means is it your fault.

Are you opposed to any natural remidies? I know Mark swears by liquid echinecia (sp, I KNOW I didn't spell that right LOL<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">) and Elderberry. The elderberry is great, sugarey tasting and sweet. The echinecia is not so nice tasting, it's actually pretty nasty. But I know it's helped me too when I've started to feel like I have a cold coming on. Maybe there are some "childrens" tasty alternatives. I'll ask Mark, his dad owns a healthfood store.

But it is NOT you. You are a WONDERFUL mother!
