Hey guys,

I tried doing a search but couldn't find anything, so here goes. Have any of you been anemic or are now? I was wondering what are the symptoms of it?
ALso what are the causes of it in CF-related anemia? I was just wondering, cause I think I might have some symptoms of it, but it could just be typical fatigue. Have any of you found it to be medication related, or related to anything else?

Thanks,
Christian

I have been anemic in the past. Mostly when I was quite ill & having hemoptysis. Its from low iron (generalized term). When I have been like that it is connnected with severe weight loss, malnutrition, poor appetite. Basically just not getting the balanced nutrition needed. Taking an iron supplement doesnt gaurantee never being anemic. Its a combo of things that make your body absorb properly.

Hi Christian,

I have been anemic since I was 12 years old with the Cystic Fibrosis. I have to take Slow FE one tablet everyday. Not to gross you out, but I became anemic once I got my monthly cycles. Since I am very regular and always have been, my iron was low about 2 weeks out of every month. It was explained to me that due to having CF, my flow was heavier than a normal woman. Therefore, I became anemic. I would be so tired that all I wanted to do was sleep. I could sleep 12 hours and still need a nap in the afternoon. Now that I take iron everyday, I fine. However, if I stop my iron for three or four days in a row, I am dead tired again. I can't go without it. To tell if you are anemic your doctor just orders bloodwork. They will know right away. Also, some iron supplements can upset your stomach. I tried two before I found this long-acting iron.

I am. I take Iron pills 2 X day and Vit. K. Not sure what caused it exactly, but I am pretty sure my liver is involved.

I'm similar to Jennifer- I only get animec during my period. The Slow FE pills don't bother my stomach and has helped a lot. I take them for 2 weeks out of the month (around my period) and I have been doing this for about 1 year now.

I just read that cipro can cause depletion of iron in your body as well as zinc. I did read that iron supplements can sometimes cause increase of bacterial infections while taking the supplement. I do remember a doctor of mine telling me years ago that iron supplements can make psuedomonas grow. For me, since I am not anemic I only buy iron free multi mineral complex. I have noticed that my sinuses would get more congested if I took supplements that contained iron post transplant.

I try to have some red meat a few times per week and eat lots of green vegetables, which is loaded in iron. Spinach has many drawbacks from what I have read. IT is not good to take spinach after surgery as it slows down healing. I was shocked when I read this. It also interferes (spinach) with magnesium absorption.

I am just writing this for those who take supplements that contain iron that may not be anemic. I would do a search and see what your doctor says. I got this source from the book "Prescriptions for nutritional healing" by James Balch MD

Oddly enough, whenever I do blood work, my blood work comes back showing i'm as healthy as a horse, with extremely good numbers in everything from blood sugar to liver function. I've been lucky that for whatever reason, i'm an extremely healthy CF in general, so i've never had to worry about ameia and other things. The only bump in the road I have had was high uric acid levels, which turned into gout down the road, which my OO took care of.

I guess I aske b/c I'm always so tired. I feel ok, I'm just so tired sometimes I can't get through the day. And I don't really know why. I kinda mention it to the doctor but I think they address the bigger issues, or they think that it's just from all the coughing. But it's more than that. My blood levels are fine.

Have any of you ladies that have been on birth control experienced more fatigue? See, I always had boundless energy, and when I started on birth control, it shot way down. I have switched 2 times, but there's only a few I can take b/c of being on antibiotics so often.
I was wondering if it oculd be that.
