Working and Breastfeeding

Well, I returned to work on Monday and I have been pumping after Alex feeds when I am at home and then midday at work. I have not leaked during the day, so one pumping seems to suffice. However, my milk seems decreased. At home, the amount of milk I pump varies with how much Alex eats at that particular feeding. But I would think it would be the same during the day, since I pump at 6:30 am before leaving home (until I'm out of milk) and at 10:30 am at school (until I'm out of milk). So far, I pumped 9 oz on Mon, 7 oz on Tues and 5 1/2 oz today. Each day I ended up pumping about 15 minutes to be out of milk. Is there some reason my milk is decreasing?

Also, since returning to work Alex has had 3 diapers where the poop looks greenish instead of mustard yellow. He doesn't show any other signs of being sick. Should I be worried?

On a side note, I went to Kellymom.com which was extremely helpful, but I couldn't find Singulair for allergies on the site. Has anyone out there breastfed while taking Singulair?

Thanks for all of the help!

First, here is what Dr. Hale says about Singulair:
"We don't have published data on Singulair or Zyrtec, but they are used in pregnant and breastfeeding women all the time. I would not be concerned about them at all. Zyrtec is used in infants and children all the time in doses much higher than would be available via milk.

However, you could try some Clarinex or Claritin and see if it works. If so its quite safe and we know the milk levels of this product."

As for pumping and increasing supply - milk is a supply and demand product. The more it is demanded (via nipple stimulation with pump or baby), the more supply there will be. You need to pump longer than till the milk runs out. Try pumping for an extra 5 minutes or so. You may find that you get a second let down but at the very least you will give your body the necessary stimulation it needs to increase supply. That is what happens when a baby has a growth spurt. They decide they need more milk so they will nurse more than usual for a few days till the supply meets their needs again. Don't hesitate to let him nurse even if you feel "empty".

I wouldn't worry about his poop if he seems to be doing ok otherwise. It could be that he had more foremilk for a particular feeding but if it is just an occasional green diaper then just disregard it.

Thanks, Caroline! It is so nice to have someone to ask questions, since my mom didn't breastfeed. I guess they didn't have lactation consultants back then and at the hospital the nurse would hand her my brother and leave. She tried to feed him but he wouldn't latch on, so she formula fed instead. Anyway, Alex is growing great, so you were right about my milk being adequate, too!

ditto everything caroline said.

i switched a few of my meds around when i was bf. i have a very very cautious doctor, and though i don't always agree w her 100% there is a trust factor there so i will try my best to work with her.
there were a few meds she didn't want me to be on while bf. looking back this was surely unecessary but oh well.
i went off advair, for example and switched to pulmicort via neb.
if your body can handle switching some things around and you feel like you are still staying healthy with the switches, do it if it gives you peace of mind and makes your doc happy.
if you decide to stay on the meds and are at peace with the slight risk it 'could' get in a 'small' amount of milk-thats fine too.
with some things, i did have to look my doc in the eye and say 'i am aware there is a risk here bc of lack of knowledge..i am willing to take that.' they have to cross their t's...
i did pump alot, to build a freezer stash and it was hard. supply and demand, thats all. keep pumping even though it seems like its doing nothing, it will start to increase.
kellymom has great tips on working moms, and moms building supply.
poop changes-hey our poop can look different from day to day, right?
keep an eye on it, i'm sure everythings fine.

oh, and btw-
you are doing alot right now! you are supermommy. be sure to take time for yourself. i can not imagine having a 1 month old, doing everything to take care of my cf and going back to work. be careful. alot of moms without cf can't do what you are doing. i'm not saying you can't, i'm just saying be flexible and listen to your body first and foremost.
