Just wanted to add that it is SO GREAT that you make the CPT part of your routine. My parents did it for us every morning while we were kids and it became a bonding time for all of us. We would fight about who got to go "first" in the morning with our parents be/c we would have more time to hang out and watch cartoons. I also would fall asleep while my parents were doing manual CPT. It means sooo much to me now when I realize how much dedication and time it took my parents to make this part of their schedules. Your son will be thankful to you -

Fit it in a few times a week while he is watching tv, and be upfront with your practioner about it.

</end quote></div>

I forgot to comment on this part......telling the doctor you are doing something when it is not happening is not a good idea. I realize you dont want to hear the lectures blah, blah, blah, but if you child DOES culture something or have problems, they might take a different approach in the treatment. For example if they believe you are doing CPT faithfully & he has a flareup then they might prescribe antibiotics quicker then not. If they know you arent doing CPT or not faithfully then they might try taking a stricter treatment before going to meds. Just wanted to throw that in also!

in my opinion, if hes so active and its working then he doesnt need physio religously. cf doesnt have a one size fits all treatment. some people do good with physio, some dont. some people do good with exercise, some dont. some people can go on and on and on about hoooooooow good physio is for THEM, but seriously, if its not working for YOU, its not working! ive lost count of the amount of times ive had to tell doctors, nurses and physios that breathing exercises make me wheezy, tired, dizzy and that i end up coughing up nothing when i know something is there. they just dont understand that a walk around the block will do 10 times more than a session of physio will ever do for me. but, just remember though, if he slacks off on the exercise or he gets an infection he will need to have physio until he can start exercising again. once again, just my opinion.

Okay i'm going to say this and not even try to justify to anyone on here. This is strictly my opinion. If his PFT's are good and stable and he's as active as you say. I say stick with the physical activity. And the vest isn't for everyone. and at 9 it's a little late to start trying to do it just to be in a good habit, I think (maybe not what do I know). And I know it's protocol to not lie to docs but you know what....some of them it's just easier to lie to because they can't agree to disagree and can't rest with the idea that you have made an educated decision to disregard thier reccomendation.

Like everyone has said, this is not a one size fits all disease. What works best for your kid is what is most important, not what a hundred statistics and reports say.

Also, I know it's just my opinion again but I think half the reason so many people rave about the vest is that since it takes such little effort more people are likely to actually do CPT with a vest. So if you take people who should be doing CPT but don't because they would actually have to concentrate to use flutter or acapella and hand them a vest which they can zone out in..I'm guessing they'd be more likely to use the vest regularly. Unless your me and you hate the vest. Okay so my opinion is biased...boo hoo, thats why it's an opinion.

To summarize: if it ain't broke don't fix it.

There are definitely CFers who are extremely mild in their younger years.... even while not doing many of the typical CF treatments.

But the way that CF is treated now is prevention. YOu mention that your son hasn't had infections, has been hospitalized, etc. Which is great. But treatment is meant to keep him that way.

The harsh reality of CF is that it is progressive. Your kid won't always be the way that he is right now. </end quote></div>

I have to agree with Amy (<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">). My son Josh was what I considered "mild" until he was nine. He had no lung involvement etc. He was extremely active. Even so, we did PT a few times a week, more if he had a cold. That way it taught him that CPT is just another way of keeping himself as healthy as possible. He didn't always like it, still doesn't, but he knows its just part of the package.

OP, I'm hoping that you'll read my final blog detailing Dr. Warwick's views on preventive care. I think that if you fully understand the role of preventive care, you will ensure that your son does CPT twice a day.

Thanks Emily for the reply, that's just it, there are a lot of

people doing the vest and CPT and still getting sick and sicker,

there is also data out there in the Cochran Report that looks at

research that has been conducted that says the vest does not make a

difference in lung function...I don't know, if he had mucous, i

would not hesitate, but he had a bronch this summer and his lungs

looked great

thanks again</end quote></div>

I would love to see this Cochran Report. Do you have a copy?</end quote></div>

And I'm still interested to see this Cochran Report that states that the Vest doesn't make a difference in lung function
