Zosyn Fanny Pack

Hey I am starting zosyn for first time ever and a bit nervous about it. So anyway company said you can do the normal drip or you can wear a little fanny pack and it has a game boy style controller that auto doses you every 6 hours and in the mean time just does a really slow pump to keep your line open, you wear the pack and just change it once a day. I can unhook in between doses for shower or a meeting or whatever.

They are coming to teach me tomorrow, has anyone ever had this? They were concerned iwth Q6 doses about staying on top of it and getting sleep etc so this seems like a good alternative?

I was just on Zosyn for a few days when I first started my home IVs. I have never heard of a fanny pack type controller with it. I did the normal way. Zosyn only takes an hour. I don't think that is long. I think if a medicine is given too slowly its not as effective, but I'm not a 100% on that. Do u have a port? I do and I just did the medication, flushed with 10cc of saline, 3cc of heprin and disconnected. I wouldnt think sleeping with a fanny pack or anything extra hooked to you would be comfortable. I stay at home while doing IVs, I dont go to work or far from home, so I can pretty much stay on schedule. But if you are someone who is busy enough that you think you may miss multiple doses in the time (2 weeks) that you are doing IVs, maybe its worth giving it a shot. I would ask the company if you could try it out for a few days, see how you like it, and if you dont is there a way you can change to the normal drip. If they say no, then I would go with what I know. If they say yes you can do that, then give it a try.

Thanks. Yes I am at home and took time from work though I did bring home my laptop to stay on top of some work. Hubby and I made a deal that I am not doing work around the house and resting alot because if I am not better next week I am in the hospital so this sounded like a way to get more rest. If it is convenient it sounds pretty cool. Anyway all that to say that they are only sending me 2 days worth meds to try and then friday I could switch to the regular if I choose. It sounds like I can just lay it next to me while I am sleeping so that should be ok.

The way it works is a very tiny amount goes in slowly all the time then you get your real dose every 6 hours like normal and its infused over 1 hour instead of the 15 minutes that you can self infuse. I am hoping this lessens the side effects as merropenem treats me badly and I am not expecting any better from zosyn.

Since it sounds like not many have tried this I will be sure to give my review.

Yes, my boys used a fanny pack for their imipenem. It is meant to be programmed, but you can override it to be manual.

Since the boys had their IVs for 6 months, we wanted to be mobile. We asked the home care company for alternatives to an IV pole. They said the only thing they offered was a 24 IV fanny pack- style pump. They didn't think it could be used for regular IV doses but after we insisted they look into it, they realized it could. It was awesome for us!
