I have been on zyvox twice. It greatly helped with my staph. The side effect I experienced was diarrhea.

OK, so it seems like I may be the only one on here who has had ill side effects from zyvox. I CANNOT take zyvox. It makes me SO nauseous and knocks my appetite out COMPLETELY. The first time I was on it, I literally did not eat anything for three days. The second time I went on it, I didn't eat and whether I would try to or not, I would start getting sick to my stomach. It got so bad for me that my doc put that I was allergic to it in my charts so I would never be prescribed it again.

I hate zyvox, but I was on it from about end of August to end of December (2007).It was the second half of my minimum year course of abx for my mycobacterium (the first half had different abx which I became resistant too).
I had peripheral neuropathy, mainly in my feet and lower legs. It started out like with a numbing feeling which slowly grew into my feet needed super soft stuff on them, like velvet, and the fuzzy soft blankets... I didnt know it was from the zyvox, didnt know that abx could do something like that. I looked up symptoms of "numb feet" and all that I found was on diabetes. I thought I was developing CFRD possible so I was continuing on the zyvox for like 2 weeks.
Finally, instead of just a numbing feeling, it became really really really painful. Burning, itching, nothing could touch them, just being in the air hurt them. I couldnt walk, couldnt wear socks, or shoes. So i looked up zyvox and found that if on it for longer than 21 days then the peripheral neuropathy could happen... so I stopped taking it.
I was with my ped doctor back then, took me like 2 weeks to get responses, because I need pain meds (First tried nerontin or something, didnt help.. took another two weeks to get tramadol and a numbing cream). I could sleep b/c the blankets made my feet hurt, my calves were numb completely, like no feeling in them. I was supposed to be starting a Spring semester, but literally, didnt know how i was getting to class b/c my feet hurt that bad. We had to buy soft moccasins that helped b/c they wre soft and kinda loose. I thought it would stop after stopping the med, but finally talked to a pharmacist and they said it takes 4-6 weeks for it to be out of your system... it took me almost 8. I still stand weird b/c of the way I go used to standing when I had the feet problem and my calves didnt have feeling till almost a year+ later.
It took so long to get pain meds and I wasnt sleeping that at night, in order to at least not be in so much pain, I would lay sideways on my bed so my feet werent touching anything. I could sleep b/c the blankets made my feet hurt, my calves were numb completely, like no feeling in them. I was supposed to be starting a Spring semester, but literally, didnt know how i was getting to class b/c my feet hurt that bad. We had to buy soft moccasins that helped b/c they wre soft and kinda loose. I thought it would stop after stopping the med, but finally talked to a pharmacist and they said it takes 4-6 weeks for it to be out of your system... it took me almost 8. I still stand weird b/c of the way I go used to standing when I had the feet problem and my calves didnt have feeling till almost a year+ later.

<br />It took so long to get pain meds and I wasnt sleeping that at night, in order to at least not be in so much pain, I would lay sideways on my bed so my feet werent touching anything. During the day I would have to keep my tub full of ice water, literally, so I could stand in the tub and numb my feet up for a while most was like 20 minutes.

<br />sorry, that was the WORST side effect ever for me. I doubt it will happen to you, like i said it was after about 6 months of treatment for me, where I had 2 weeks of IV zyvox, the rest was oral. I dont remember if I was nauseous or not b/c the end stuck out so bad haha.

<br />Just keep that in mind, b/c my lovely ped cf doctor never bothered to mention anything about the "long term" uses of zyvox... hence why I switched to an adult cf doctor... well in my case, that experience was really the "straw that broke the camels back"

<br />I had peripheral neuropathy, mainly in my feet and lower legs. It started out like with a numbing feeling which slowly grew into my feet needed super soft stuff on them, like velvet, and the fuzzy soft blankets... I didnt know it was from the zyvox, didnt know that abx could do something like that. I looked up symptoms of "numb feet" and all that I found was on diabetes. I thought I was developing CFRD possible so I was continuing on the zyvox for like 2 weeks.

<br />Finally, instead of just a numbing feeling, it became really really really painful. Burning, itching, nothing could touch them, just being in the air hurt them. I couldnt walk, couldnt wear socks, or shoes. So i looked up zyvox and found that if on it for longer than 21 days then the peripheral neuropathy could happen... so I stopped taking it.

I am on zyvox most of the time and have had some side effects one major one being my liver enzymes become elevated from the drug. So when I am on it I have to take a higher dose of Actigal. Also gives me stomach problems and you have to be very careful with what you eat a lot of food interacts with this medication and causes very rapid heart rate and high blood pressure. And no beer or wine well your on it either will cause the same effects as the food interactions. Good luck hopefully you will not need it!
