Need to learn more about End Stage CF (Supporting a Friend)

Wonderful! It warms my heart to hear you're so glad to have him in your life. And he's lucky to have you as well. It sounds like he's found a wonderful family. I was concerned about insurance. Medicaid is a federal program with federal requirements but the individual states have a great deal...

What things did CF Center tell you to do/not do re avoiding infections

AboveAll . . . I never heard a tip about avoiding bathtub toys from my CF Center. I absolutely believe that is right, but they never told me. I discovered it one day when a particularly strong squeeze on one delivered something brackish out of the hole! I realized it was mold!! How foolish...

What things did CF Center tell you to do/not do re avoiding infections

Hi Ratatosk. Could you find out more about the cat precaution? We have TWO! And my little guy absolutely worships one of them. My assumption too was that we had to keep our CFer from cleaning litter boxes but not necessarily away from the cats.....?!

What things did CF Center tell you to do/not do re avoiding infections

Hi Believing. I know what it's like to feel as though you should have done something to prevent an infection. I have kicked myself many times. I suspect it's a common feeling! But the truth is that CF is an immensely complicated condition. With risks both hidden and otherwise, at every...

What things did CF Center tell you to do/not do re avoiding infections

Let me add....no swimming in rivers or lakes. Ocean and well chlorinated pools are ok - and salt water pools are NOT better than chlorinated ones - avoid salt water pools. The level of salt is insufficient to kill bacteria. They're worse. But that is not from our CF Center. It's from our...

What things did CF Center tell you to do/not do re avoiding infections

This is a great thread. There is no consistent "handout" of which I'm aware given to new CF parents by the Centers. I remember how our Center sent us a handout on Pseudemonas telling us to avoid hot tubs AFTER our son tested positive. I was livid. That was a heck of a time to tell us since...

Need to learn more about End Stage CF (Supporting a Friend)

I'm so sorry to hear this. You and your daughter gave him a gift of love and caring when he had no one else. Bless you. The best person to ask about his chances of survival are his doctors. No one else knows his condition so intimately. I do so hope his family can respond warmly. I'm...

    Need help/Advice Please

Great point nmw - I suspect yoga and swimming may be two of the best ways to build your muscles and stamina up when you're not in shape for more intensive sports. And you don't have to play a sport for an hour to start or even a whole game. If you love football, basketball, whatever... play...

    Need help/Advice Please

Rick - how about completely changing your exercise routine to generate interest. I always found routine exercises boring. But.....how about basketball three times a week for an hour or more? Swimming? Join the Y and change it up every month. Are you interested in yoga? Dancing? Taekwando...

Need to learn more about End Stage CF (Supporting a Friend)

I really wonder about his family. Their relationship may not be salvageable. It may even be toxic. But I wonder whether a psychologist or social worker might help explore that. Given his age, it might simply be a case where teenage angst was unmanageable and they parted at odds to let the...

Need to learn more about End Stage CF (Supporting a Friend)

I really want to thank you and honor you for your willingness to love, support, and assist this young man. Sometimes people want to run the other way to avoid the potential pain of loving someone through their challenges. You, your daughter, and your family are obviously exceptional people...

how much exercise is to much

I'm so sorry to hear you're having troubles this Christmas Eve and are frightened and worried. I sit here by my own child's bedside, listening to his little lungs breathe and wait for the coughs which have increased over the past two days. I've thought much the same - he deserves good health...

I'm so glad to hear things went well! Hopefully the results can tell you how to avoid this happening again. Blessings.

    Doing the vest while inverted!?!

An interesting idea, to be sure! At the risk of dousing the fun, let me strongly suggest you speak with a respiratory therapist first! I remember when we were first instructed in using our cupped hands and then later a percussor to perform what was called "postural drainage" on our new baby...

What does your CF Clinic say re Exercise

Oh heck. I get tired just watching him run and sweat! but I didn't really answer your question. The CF clinic never says exactly how much exercise he should get other than the standard pediatric recommendation for at least an hour of exercise a day. But whenever I ask them if something he's...

What does your CF Clinic say re Exercise

Well you can tell him whatever you want since you're his mom! But as for me, I wouldn't tell him he needs a break. I'd just given him permission to take one if he needs it.

What does your CF Clinic say re Exercise

AboveAll, I've never heard of a suggestion that a CFer restrict exercise. I suppose there may be some situations , but I can't imagine. The only limits I can imagine is how ever much you can tolerate. Maybe someone will chime in here. Exercise helps increase lung function - for CFers, people...

    Polyp???

My son has always been too little to have any tubes run into his sinuses while awake! He'll stay still for a little bit of inspection with a lighted tube in the chair, but I don't believe they can see all the sinuses with that. A CT scan - totally painless - is what they've always used on him...

    Polyp???

Polyps do affect the sense of smell and can affect vision, cause headaches, snoring, and generally cause pain and other issues as well. If your pediatrician is at all unsure, do ask for a referral to an ENT - Ear, Nose and Throat specialist. Also known as otolaryngology.

    Worry over runny nose?

Most all of us are hypervigilant. There's a difference between unnecessary worrying and paying attention! You want to respond quickly to any bug in a CFer. It's ok - feel free to call the CF Clunic. CF kids get viruses too. If she has no other symptoms, I wouldn't call yet but that's me. If...
