New clinic protocol recommeded by Cystic Fibrosis Canada

As of last Friday, Cystic Fibrosis Canada recommends that the medical personnel gown and glove up to meet with patients to prevent cross contamination. My clinic has applied the recommendations immediately and I am hoping that this new policy change will be reflected in how nurses handle the...

Having a relationship with someone with Cystic Fibrosis

cfgf0417 has great advices. Also, make sure you don't treat her like anything lee than normal. She seems to not want people to treat her differently because of her CF, hence why she hides it.

Avoid hotels unless you want to run the risk of catching MRSA found in all hotels.

For those who've had an embolization...

I had a bilateral embolization in 2010. The bleedings greatly decreased right after and kept decreasing afterwards. I can't actually remember the last time I bled, which is great! I did not have any fever. Only some mild pain on the right side. I would have it done again if I needed it.

    Sleep Question

If you end up having to go back to the hospital, don't hesitate to heavily put the blame on them for not letting your rest because they're apparently too fucking stupid to understand that you are sick. Use my words if you need to, that should drive the message home.

    Vertebre pain

I had back spasms for several days once due to pain caused by Levaquin. There are 2 things that helped. A hot shower and sleeping at 45° on a memory foam pillow. The pillow was like a miracle. For the first time in a week I felt the pressure in my spine releasing. Go to Walmart and try to find...

    keep getting short of breath

These are the two possible causes I was going to suggest. I know a CFer who started declining rapidly and then dying after developing an allergy to aspergillus. If you have yeast infection, it is likely that antibiotics will cause the infection to flare up because the yeast will find itself...

    Combined Insurance Claims

I've had this insurance ever since I was diagnosed as a baby. They never failed to pay for all my days of hospitalization including whatever amount of recovery days I filed for.

NaCl bolus may help make mucus more liquid?

Thanks for mentioning this! I googled "hydration therapy cystic fibrosis" and found this : http://www.cf2chat.com/e107/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewtopic.php?37733 Her doctor's logic behind doing this is the same as what I mentioned : That is would help loosening up the mucus. I would love to...

eCAPs, the next cool thing to fight antibiotic resistant infection?

http://aac.asm.org/content/57/6/2511.abstract Emphasis mine. What is in bold is very important. Scientists have previously tried to use peptides to kill bacteria, but they faced a problem where the efficiency of the peptides depended greatly on the environment's pH, levels of salt and the...

eCAPs, the next cool thing to fight antibiotic resistant infection?

Through the serendipity of science, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh have discovered a potential treatment for deadly, drug-resistant bacterial infections that uses the same approach that HIV uses to infect cells. The National Institutes of Health-supported...

NaCl bolus may help make mucus more liquid?

When I went to hospital for influenza in December, I received two 0.9% NaCl boluses within 24 hours to lower my fever and increase my blood pressure. Boluses are where they inject you with a large amount of something to reach a desired concentration of that something in your bloodstream. In my...

    What has helped me

There are some people here who are big on green smoothies. I recently bought a powerful Ninja blender and I have been making smoothies. You really have to be careful about what foods you add to your shakes though. All CFers should stay away from ginger. Better safe than sorry. Ginger promotes...

    CF and Sleep Meds

This is very very interesting! I wonder in Bendryl suffers the same fate? In my case, a dose of Benadryl given orally isn't nearly as effective as the same dose given intravenously. I would say it goes as far as being 75% less effective.

    After having a PICC Line

Get hydrocolloid dressings, stamp one over your hole, shower like a boss! I find it useful to keep a roll of hospital tape and use it to "peel" the dead skin around the hole so the hydrocolloid bandage sticks better (it will come off rather easily if you have a lot of dead skin that didn't...

    Reactions to Ceftazidime

Apparently, Ceftazidime is the beta-lactam that most often causes allergic reactions. (Or so I was told) The reactions I noted were the palms and the soles of my feet becoming red and itchy, skin dryness and skin hypersensitivity and the underside of my tongue swelling. Those were the most...

    Cannabis Treatment for CF

I would personally go for tincture. It lasts longer and doesn't get you as high. Tincture is the process of extracting components using high percentage alcohol, usually 94%. It is consumed by putting a squirt or 2 under your tongue for quick delivery (however, putting 94% alcohol under your...
