My 6yo daughter is allergic to milk. a few days after she was born, she started having horrible diahrea. She was nursing and I had to give up all dairy from my diet so the milk proteins would not get into my milk. I nursed her for 2 years then we started her on Soy milk.
Now she can tolerate ice cream, butter and yogurt because these either have little milk protein (mostly fat) or the proteins are modified (in the yogurt.) She can also tolerate small amounts of milk (as you might find in baked goods.)
We were told that the allergic reaction (e.g. diahrea) can take several weeks to completely go away after an exposure to milk.
We were also told that goat's milk proteins are similar to cow's milk protein so switching to goat's milk may not help. We were able to give our daughter goat's milk only after her allergy became more moderate at about age 4.
