YAY!!! Congratulations on your AWESOME accomplishment! I want to run a 5k, but running on a treadmill is so different and haven't been able to train outside cause there are always "ozone days" here and also the temps have been too hot to run outside. Anyway, you inspire me!!! GOOD FOR YOU!!! (and your mom!!!)

How did you train for it? Any tips if I run on a treadmill usually? Is there any way to prepare if you usually run on a treadmill? I know outside is WAY tougher!

Take care!

Hey, Em!

Trenton, eh? That hits REALLY close to home!
You know you're from Downriver when you've heard of Brownstown Township! I used to live in the neighborhood near the township hall, and played at the "Ice Box" ice rink (Don't know if that's still there, anymore either!).
I also used to do Cable Box collecting for the local Cable company, so am quite familiar with the Downriver Area. Rode my ten-speed around Grosse Ille a few times, nice water scenery.

Comerica Park is also new to me...I last heard rumor after I left for Japan that they were up-in-arms over renovating Tiger Stadium, or making a new one...guess they made a new one and can't decide what to do with the vacant space where the old one is with all the history! (Personally, I miss the Grand Prix racing...did they stop that way back when, too?)

Where does your next run for the 10K take place? Downtown Detroit?

Sonia where do you live?? Man that stinks..I hate to even be outside when it is so hot, let alone run. I started training in September so I didn't have any hot days and I'm kinda dreading the summer runs.

I followed the 5K training program that I linked below.
www.halhigdon.com/10ktraining/10knovice.htm

Treadmill running is so different than running outside. Last week I did one of my cardio days inside on the treadmill and I can run so much more and easier on the treadmill. It is so crazy!

You definately want to train outside..to me running 2 miles outside is like running 4 on a treadmill..all of the different surfaces, the temperature, the fresh air, etc will all help you get stronger. A treadmill will obviously help strengthen your lungs but it won't really train you for what's to come. A majority of people that I've told about my training have asked me specifically if I'd been training on a treadmill or outside and were happy when I told them outside. You should have some endurnce built up from the treadmill already so it should be a good transition.

Oh and definately spend money on good running shoes..take care of your feet!!

The program I do only has to running like 3 days a week, 2 days of cross training, 1 days off and the other day(mondays) light stuff. So if you can make it outside 3 days a week to run I would definately do it.

I just checked the race results today..they sent us on at least an extra 1/4 of a mile yesterday, on accident...my mom place 9th out of 48 in her age group!! and I place 43rd out of 60..I am happy with that! I stayed by my mom and kept her going.
