2 questions???

When I got pregnant my husband was tested and he was not a carrier for the 94 of mutations they tested for. However I was wondering everyones thoughts on, should I still get her tested?

Also, I am currently in the hospital with IVs. Well I have cultured staph and psuedo. The sensitivities aren't back yet. Well Im on aztreonam and cefepime. However from the way my doc talks neither of which treats the staph. Well the delima in starting another med like vanc. is I am nursing. Has anyone ever been on vanc while nursing? Or does the staph just go away? I don't plan on weaning her anytime soon. The doc seems like it would be ok to just stay on what I'm on, but its been one week and I really don't feel much better.

To your first question here's my opinion. Find out how many genes they tested your husband. If it was NOT the full panel test (over 1500 known mutations) then yes, get her tested.

I'm sorry I can't help with your second question as I don't have kids and have only done IVs twice.

Drs. don't know crap about lactation. Drug PI's all say not to breastfeed while on this medicine. The reason is not because it is necessarily bad but because they haven't tested it. I recommend you pick up a copy of Medication and Mother's Milk by Hale. Here is his website where you can search the archives. Your lactation consultant can post questions on the site but you can't. Also, here is another site. Read up on all meds you are thinking about taking and make a call about it yourself.

I breastfed my son for 1 year (just stopped because I am in a clinical trial!). FYI staph does pass through breastmilk but it is not viewed as a reason to discontinue breastfeeding by the lactation or pediatric world.

Your child should be extensively sequenced (DO NOT SETTLE FOR ANY SORT OF PANEL TEST!!). Not to alarm you but my son was found to have two mutations after my husband tested negative to 97 mutations. It's better to know and be proactive than to wait for symptoms to arise. Personally I wouldn't have been able to handle the guilt if I'd found out later and knew I could have tested him early. I hope you can "close the book" on cf and your daughter.

Take care of yourself and yes Vanco is a great drug for breastfeeding. I believe it is an LI. Do your own research!! And pm me if you have any questions.

If you can't find your answer on his website and you don't want to purchase the book, call a La Leche League leader. At least one leader in your area is going to have a copy of Hale's book for you and can do a look-up on vancomycin. www.llli.org
