i have mild gestational diabetes
Hey there:
I have to say that diet control worked very well for me. My blood sugar was always in the safe zone. I concentrated on taking is as many carbs as my sugars would allow and increasing my protein and fats to up my calorie intake. Read all of your food labels like they are the most interesting thing you have ever read. They are invaluable to keep you on the right track!!<img src="">
Protein kept me going and helped me to gain that half pound a week. I stayed at a healthy weight the whole pregnancy, but had to eat like a mad woman the last couple of months to keep my weight up. I was looking back in my food logs and was amazed by what all I was eating, lots of everything with just enough carbs to keep me and Matthew healthy! Some days I noticed I tolerated sugar better than others...so, you just have to take it one day at a time. Also, with me if I paired a protein food with a food with higher carbs in it my blood sugar seemed to stay in a better range. My numbers ranged from 80 fasting in the morning to 130 that was two hours after eating a meal. Always check your sugars two hours after a meal and at fasting and more often if your doc says so. Keeping a food log helped me to keep on top of my sugars and to learn what worked for my body. It is a whole new way of eating when you have to watch your sugars, but it is totally worth it to prevent having that baby before it is due to come out!! That was the averages of my blood sugars. oh, don't eat fast food!!! The sandwiches are loaded with more carbs than you can imagine. I really messed up my sugar readings a few times with fast food. Just stay away from it all!! Sandwiches that you think are lower carb are still to high.. Roast Beef at Arby's for example is too high in carbs. Stay away from french fries, potatoes, white bread, white rice is not so good either( I used that Sara Lee Delightful bread( it has half the carbs of normal bread)ice cream, the obvious sugary things....don't drink your carbs either.....watch out for cereals too. Juice is crazy for your blood sugar..... They are so high in carbs. I often had an English muffin, cheese, sausage sandwich for breakfast with a decaf tea. Often times I ate two of those, oh and regular spagetti avoid it. It ups your blood sugar like mashed potatoes do!!! Instead try the whole wheat versions of pasta. The carbs process slower and teamed up with protein like cheese and hamburger go through your system nice and slow. That is what you want. Slow releasing carbs. You have to be very careful and aware of what you are eating when you go gestational. I worked really hard at it and was lucky enough that it worked for me and I did not have to take insulin. I don't know if and when I have another baby if I will be that lucky, but here is hoping!!
If you have too much trouble with keeping your sugars under control there is always insulin. It is not the enemy if you have exhaused other avenues of controling your sugars, or if your sugars are running in the danger zone. I had a mild case of gestational, so I could get away with strict diet changes. I am not sure how the insulin in your body is working for you.....I have a very shriveled up pancrease and need to take enzymes to help digest food. Some of it still works for me, but I have to take some enzymes to help out my digestion. My blood sugars went back to normal after I delivered Matthew and they continue to stay normal at this point. I do check them randomly to make sure. The key is to catch the problem as soon as you can. We have to fight to keep ourselves healthy!! Your body may just not be able to keep your sugars down with strict diet control, or it may respond very well to upping the protein intake and fat intake, dairy is a good source of calories, watch out for sweetened yogurts tho, go plain and add fruit to it.
I hope that you can control it with diet. I
You stay healthy and keep that baby in there until 38+ weeks you can do it!!
Ask me anything, I will try to be online more.
Much Love and all the Best to YOu!~!
