I don't even know exactly what mutation I have, but I do know that it's closer to the surface of the gene since I'm very lucky in not being as sick as most (I think my lucky GA up above, and God, each and every day). Is a defect closer to the surface considered a "Gating" mutation?

Regardless, this is great news, and hopefully the price will come down dramatically to boot!

Does anyone know if the one mutation the drug is for is a mild or more severe case of CF? Cant wait for df508 to happen because that effects 90 percent of us!

In general I think its somewhat milder than the DF508 mutations although genotype isn't the only indicator of severity. There's also enviromental factors, compliance with treatments and over all genetic make-up.

Can anyone tell me how realistic it is to hope for a drug like this for df508 in the next five or so years? I feel like they have tried before, only to have the trial not work so they try another combination of drugs. I am beginning to lose hope that any of it is working.

For those of you that will benefit from this current drug, I am so happy for you all! It is very exciting<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

If vx 809 gets approved then it should hit the market in 2-3 years. In the first part of the phase 2 trial vx 809 was only administered in a small dose for 7 days and was generally meant to test the drug for safety. The drug will be administered in larger doses for much longer in the second part of the trial which is scheduled to be completed in July of this year. If vx 809 doesn't make the grade then we should know more about the 3rd corrector vx 661 by then. So I would say that its too early to tell but if vertex is unsuccessful in curing df508 I know of at least two other companies that are working on correctors for this genotype so I would say there will DEFINITELY be something for the delta's in the next 8-10 years.

I'm going to Jewish on Monday to sign insurance papers and get started on the drug--I'm so excited but very nervous. You know the drugs they approve only years later to recall it, so I'm a bundle of nerves.
