I got to thinking, although I like this sterilizer, I looked at the manufactor's website. Why not just buy a UVwand sterilizer and use it for nebulizer pieces, seems much easier and similar price.

ehtansky21-I believe what we have established is that we view things when it comes to CF differentley. We were told by OUR CF clinic that the Germ Gaurdian is a safe way to keep germs from growing on her nebs, aero chamber etc..I don't think your in a postition or have a title by your name to think that what my wife and I are doing for our little girl is not the right thing. Or to make comments such as the one you made in your first reply-- "<i>I hate to burst your bubble, but I would hate it if I was where you are now and no one told me the facts." </i>That came across as very arrogant.

Since day 1 of her being diagnosed in 2005 we have done only what is best for her and her health, and for you to comment to my wife the way you did about "so called research" is unacceptable. Our office told us that it was safe for her to use, and at the end of the day our office knows our little girl and her health better than anyone here. We have no reason to not trust what her care team says as they are very knowledgable when it comes to her care. She is at the age of 5 and we have been blessed in her health. Much of that comes with her beat this attitude, but alot comes from her parents knowing this disease.

If your going to comment to another CF parent, do not do it in a way that is chastising to the other parent. On a positive note to end this I wish nothing but the very best for your sons as you are taking a very proactive approach to ensure they have healthy lives.

Here is a link to directions for sterilizing from the CFF in case anyone is questioning how they are doing things:

I personally have checked this file out several times just to make sure we are doings things right!

Let's stop pointing fingers. The fact is that the Germ Guardian is NOT sterilzing. I'm not stating that it is or is not acceptable, only the scientific fact that it is not sterilizing anything put in it.

Requirments for Heat Sterilization (checked 2 sources: College Physics textbook & Wiki)

Steam (under pressure): 15 minutes at 121°C (250°F) OR 3 minutes at 273°F

Dry Heat: 1.5hrs at 160°C (320°F) OR 6 minutes at 374°F

Therefore regardless of if it hits & maintains 320°F, since the post stated it runs for 30 minutes, it is scientifically incapable of sterilizing the contents using dry heat alone.

Disclaimer: while there are wide fluctuations most common soft plastics have a melting point in the mid-300's or much lower (thus why we can't boil some neb parts at 212°F), so you could not heat bottle parts to the 374°F needed to sterilize in only 6 minutes.
