A simple question

Hello,

What steps do you take when you get a cold?

Do you take (oral) antibiotics straight away to avoid an escalation to something worse or do you do the simple things healthy people do, like taking aspirin, vitamins and rest?

Thanks,

Vera

Antibiotics DO NOT prevent colds or ease them quicker. Colds are a virus & antibiotics do not work on viruses.

This is one reason that antibiotic resistance is on the rise because people want their doctors to prescribe abx for things that really arent treatable by them AND the doctors too often do.

IF you have a cold there are meds to ease the symptoms, but ultimately rest, additional treatments, fluids, balanced diet, good hygiene etc is what works!

I understand your question, OP.

For most CFer's, a virus can aggravate the bacteria we are currently colonized with. Therefore a viral issue can quickly turn into a viral and bacterial issue.

When I was younger, my PA didn't flare up when i got a cold. I could kick the cold and that would be the end of the story.

But the past 10 years or so, every time I get a cold my PA flares up and I need abx.

The general recommendation is that if you don't feel better in 10 days from a cold, the virus is generally gone by 10 days so it's considered bacteria.

Since I know myself, I no longer wait 10 days to see if my issue is bacterial. I know what my PA flare up feels like, so I generally wait 2-3 days before getting on abx. I have 3-4 strains of PA and one of them is bound to flourish when I catch a virus.

And there's no sense in waiting 10 days for lung damage to occur - for me it's a clear pattern with viruses so I aggressively treat with abx.

Good question!

Thanks to you both!

In fact, i was a bit confused about this but your answers helped me remember that colds are not treated with antibiotics.
The times we need antibiotics after getting a cold is when the cold has worsened our CF. So i should wait until the cold passes (not even sure if it's a cold.. for now my throat just feels funny, but i can see it coming) and see if i do need to take other measures or if the cf itself is "OK".

Thanks!
