Hi James,

Actually, you are more likely to get an infection not taking Advair. Advair, with it's bronchodilator and anti-inflammatory will keep your airways open helping the mucus to be able to get out, rather that sitting in your lungs, surely causing infection.

I was taking it for years and with an anti-inflammatory lifestyle, I had less infections. I started with 50O and once my lung function started to go up, I went down to the 250. Did well. Went down to 100 and I started losing some lung function. Went back up to 250 and started doing very well on it. So the lowest dosage that you can do well on is best, because of possible side effects.

One time when I went off Advair completely, my peak flow dropped 25%! I started it again, my peak flow shot back up. I take Asmanex now, which is also a inhaled steroid. And I just take a bronchodilator separately. But Advair is really good too.

If you want to avoid thrush in your throat, in addition to gargling well, a good multi-strain Probiotic is essential. The refrigerated kind in the health food store is best and look for one that has independent testing to avoid one with contaminants, which lately has been a reported problem.

By the way, inhaled steroids, not being systemic like oral steroids or cortisone injections, aren't as much of a threat. If you look at the Advair website, it does mention a higher possibility of Pneumonia for people with COPD. But also they are testing a drug like this, some percentage of people with COPD would have gotten pneumonia anyway. And by taking the lowest dosage of Advair that works on you, the benefits far outweigh the risks.

My dr told me that one of the drugs in Advair also helps to keep PA at bay because the drug prevents PA from being able to colonize in the lungs

I had been on advair for over 2 years and what happened with me was the advair was blocking all of my other medications from working...odd only like 8% of ppl on advair get this problem with it so I had to stop it...that was the reason I was getting more infections.

I guess you would have to see how it reacts with you. I was on it for about two years and noticed a change. I felt better and did not have to use the inhaler as much.

One day after I finished my meds and took the Advair 250/50 the room started spinning and short of calling 911 I thought I was done for the count. This episode lasted for about five minutes but felt like an eternity. I could not move my hands, feet or head but was able to barely speak and see.

After taken to the hospital which my wife called my DR's cell (he gives his personal cell to all his patients) It was determined that the Advair had given me a hyper tension attack which I had never experienced in the past. I am now on Spiriva which seems to work about the same.
