Allergies?

Thanks for the plug, Mel

Dr. Warwick claims that a strong # of CFers have allergies. Hopefully he'll chime in on this thread.

But my allergies caused a huge drop in my PFT's.... I know I wouldn't be anywhere near where I am today if I didn't have my allergies treated.

Be careful of Zyrtec due to its ability to dry out secretions. Allegra (no drying, equal efficacy) is available for kids starting at 6 months of age. I would go that route instead.

Check out my blog on other ways besides pills to treat allergies. Scroll down to categories and click How to treat allergies

As a North Carolinian with major allergies, I will say that it has been a rough year for allergies this year. I have had bad allergies for 27 years and this is one of the worst years I've had because of the major swings in temperatures and things in bloom at wrong times of the year. I am on double doses of my usual maintenance med doses. I'm not sure if you're seen through UNC (and my guess is you are seen through the peds CF clinic if you are) but the adult clinic is located in the same place as the allergy clinic. I had a consult with them at the request of the pulmo doctor and the doctor I was referred to is very knowledgeable and they ran a series of tests for allergies including skin tests and some newer things they are experimenting with.

Tonya, I'm very glad that your son isn't beginning another exacerbation. I do want to caution you, however, that we should never under estimate allergies. Allergic reactions can be very serious - even seasonal allergies. They have been the cause of exacerbations for Jordan in the past. They can cause the same yucky build-up in the bronchial tubes & lungs as any virus can. Keeping allergies under control is very important to a CFer's health. That is the good news, though. You CAN control allergies, and it will most likely significantly improve the way your son feels.

I'm glad you can rest a little easier now.

Yes, my older daughter, Kayla, had a tough time for a few years, especially every spring and fall. She would cough so badly and we kept treating her with antibiotics. Finally I asked to have her allergies tested. We went ahead and tested both girls. They had the skin testing done.

Poor Kayla's were so bad. Her back was so swollen and red. Some of the spots were still there a week later! We started her on Zyrtec, and insurance refused to pay for it after the first round. We finally moved on to Claritin (they have one that melts in their mouth really quickly) and that has helped a lot. She takes one every day, and notices a difference if she doesn't take it.

There are some days that the mold or tree (the two that she is highly allergic to) counts sky rocket, and even the claritin doesn't help, but for the most part it really has been great for her.

But since we have had them under control, her PFT's have increased and her cough has decreased!
