Allergies?

Thanks everyone,

NoExcuses, how have I missed all of the great information you have on your blog? It is a great resource!

Stacey, thanks for the heads up. Now I am not sure this is all allergy related. Our CF doc is considering this an exacerbation and said she will not hesitate to start ivs in 2 1/2 weeks if his number are not up. It was his pediatician who saw him yesterday and said he thinks he is having allergy trouble. The more I am thinking about this, the more I think I may be jumping the gun by assuming this will be an easy fix. If he had allergy issues, our CF doc would have mentioned that as a possible reason for everything last Tuesday when we saw her. But, maybe, hopefully, it is allergies. I would like to think we will be able to go a little longer than three months without ivs again.

Tammy, thanks for your comments. It is nice to know that controlling allergies can boost FEVs back up. I am really hoping that is what is causing this.

Glad you enjoy my Blog. I do my best to give back as much as I can to this site.

I've been trying to get Jeanne and the techs to fix the #s next to my blog categories, but they haven't done anything yet. So sorry for that confusion.

But I'm glad you enjoy the resource.

Understand that inflammation due to allergies can lead to an exacerbation from bacteria in a CFer. So don't shun the abx if the doc says they're needed. But you can prevent the inflammation and subsequent bacterial flare-up by properly treating those allergies.

I can't tell you how many years I struggled with what I was convinced were allergies but my docs didn't buy it. They kept telling me it was normal CF stuff. There's no way my FEV1 would be 95% right now if I didn't get a hold of my allergies. I would be lower by at least 20 or 30 points I'm convinced.

Best of luck to you.

Tonya,

Our CF doctor never suggested the allergies to us. I just started to notice little things that made me think that maybe it could be allergies. And she seemed to be on oral antibiotics every time I turned around.

Most likely it was from what I have learned on this forum that caused me to think that maybe it was something different than a 'lung infection'. And she had started to culture Aspergillis around the same time, and I was getting a little concerned with the increase in cough and that mold growing in there.

So I called and asked clinic if they could test the girls just to rule out or confirm, since it is a relatively easy test. They didn't hesitate. They even scheduled it for me and our CF doc came into the room when it was completed to go over the results and game plan!

My younger daughter, Hannah, had only one allergen, aspergillis, but even then it was a huge welt like my other daughter had all over her back! So, at least now, when Hannah starts an increase in cough, I already have ruled out the allergies, and we can go straight to the true source of the problem!

So, in both cases, one with and one without allergies, I am so much more comfortable when symptoms come about in knowing what to try before jumping straight to antibiotics. I feel like I have a bit more 'control'...if that is possible<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Getting my allergies under control has made a world of difference. I have many more sinus issues than lung issues. Once I had the skin tests and started on constant allergy meds, my health as been MUCH better over all. I totally agree about how bad allergies can be for someone with cf. As Amy stated, not only is there the increase in secretions, but the inflammation of tissues can cause bacterias to be trapped as well. Even if this is an exacerbation this time, I would definitely get skin testing done on him if you think he has allergies. Might make a lot of difference for him!
