Kudos to everyone who is engaging in exercise as an augment therapy to Tobi, Pulmozyne, HyperSal, etc... It's awesome that so many CF'ers have realized the lasting benefits of vigorous exercise. Now it's important to maintain both- never think that one can replace the other. If you stick with it, you will live a longer and more fruitful life.
I have been running since I could walk. My parents had me doing it when I was very young; my friends had me doing it everytime I went outside; my coach had me doing it for track; Clearwater Beach and Pensacola Beach Civil Service Boards had me doing it when I was a beach lifeguard; and my little girls have me doing it as a father who wants to be there to monitor their dating down the road.
I was fortunate enough to stay one step ahead of CF while waiting for newer therapies to come to market. As fast as I was on land and sea, when I was younger, I am aware that I know longer run to decrease my times....I run to increase my time- on Earth.
CF will always try to catch up with you. It's gonna have to pick up its pace to catch me.
P.S. My FEV was 102 when I was 19; moved to a low of 72 in the 23 years since then, but stabilized now at 80 with the addition of pulmozyme therapy, and obvious continued exercise.
