Any CF runners?

Hi,
I'm just curious how many of us run either on a treadmill or outside? If you run, how often and how long or far do you go without stopping for a walk? Do you jog or run fast?
I run a couple times a week. I alternate my running on the treadmill with biking or elliptical cause I've had ankle injuries and don't want to overdo it.
I run for about a mile at 11 1/2 minutes per mile. I feel awesome after I run, though my HR is usually over 180, and I'm usually ready to drop when I'm done with the mile!
Anyway, just wondering if other CFers' run and what their experiences are with it? Do you find it really difficult but push yourself anyway? Do you run a few minutes, walk, run, walk? What is your routine?

Hi Sonia,

My name is Jennifer. I run/walk on my treadmill 5 days per week. I usually run 2 miles each day. The first quarter mile I walk as a warm-up. Then, I run another quarter mile. From then on, I alternate with each quarter mile. The last lap I walk as a cool-down. It takes me about 30 minutes. I use to run the whole thing in 20 minutes, but I beat myself up way too much. I'd run the two miles and at first I'd feel fine. An hour later, I start feeling terrible all over. Two hours later, I'd run a fever of 100F. Then, I'd take an Advil or something to feel better. My PFT's were around 89%. Now with run/walking, they are around 87%. Also, I get just the right amount of exercise and have no after effects. Although, I noticed that when I only walk, I get no benefit at all. I run higher blood sugars and have lower PFT's. For me, only walking is worthless.

Hi Sonia

Throughout my late teens and my twenties I would walk fast and jog like what you describe a ten minute mile. sometimes I would run a nine minute mile when I was in good shape. Now that I am older I only do eliptical at level eight (precor) which is difficult and sometimes I go at a lower level but I go very fast. I also use the treadmill and jog fast on my mini trampoline. I love it.

I have found to keep my Blood Glucose in the low one hundreds I must do a forty minute session of aerobics non stop and go at a fast pace. I load up on good carbs/protein and away I go.

The only problem I have is I work out every day and I really need a rest so tomorrow I hope I just walk fast on my treadmill. I am gaining a lot of weight with my current program. I am five eight and weigh 131 llbs. I want to get up to 145 and I will be happier.

THAT'S EXCELLENT FOR BOTH OF YOU!!!! Thanks for sharing your stories. I often feel bad talking about running, since many CFers can't do so, and it is a chore just to walk. So, I feel good knowing there are other CFers with mild-moderate disease that can and do physical activity.

I find cross training works for me.

I swim once to twice a week, cycle to and from places, walk at night go jogging, lift weights 3-4 times a week just keep active take the stairs park the car a lil away

i think activity levels combined with some luck has helped me stay out of the hospital for all of my 27 years!

Yeah CF runners!

I ran competitively in HS and College, and it has made all the difference in my fight against CF.

I continue to run a couple times a week, at much slower paces, for much less time. I also lift 3-4 days a week, bike to work several days a week (in the warmer months), and swim occasionally. For about 5 years, I ran 70 miles a week. My PR's were decent, I was in the middle of the pack in the NCAA Division III races... some of my better days: ran a 55 minute 15K, a 4:34 mile, and 28min. 8 sec. 5 mile.

I agree with Sonia about being a little self conscious on the board, but these are some of my proudest accomplishments, and I hope that some people reading this find them personally encouraging.

There was a CF guy (I think he was in his twenties) who completed the Comrade's marathon last year. I don't know him but saw it on the TV coverage. That's a +-75km race up and down some really steep hills!

Most of my running is treadmill but I also run outdoors at least once a week. I have entered a couple of 10k runs in the past and my next one is in May. I'm aiming for a time of about 55minutes which isn't too shabby for a CFer

I just started running on a regular basis in November. I had a double lung transplant nearly 6 years ago. I credit exercise with much of my success after transplant.

I've completed three 5K races and have an 8K on Sunday. I love running! It feels so good. Six years ago, walking to the mailbox was a struggle.
