Anyone else dreading the upcoming months?

The next few months are the favorites of most families...but dreaded by me. I dread cold/flu season and I dread get togethers with family and friends... Sad huh!?

In the spring, summer, and early fall it seems easier...we all breathe a sigh of relief. Dinner with friends/family, cook outs, church activities, ect seem a little easier. This time of year most activities are outside, so you worry less about people showing up sick, or wearing fragrances, or smelling like an ash tray...because we can just stay outside and the atmosphere takes care of these problems...the only worry is making sure the grill is in the right spot to blow the smoke else where.

Then here comes the colder weather. Birthday parties, family reunions, holidays, and just get togethers seem so much more stressful. These activities are held indoors, so you have to worry about if people are not feeling well, if the house smells like air fresheners, if they have an indoor pet, if the guest will forget and wear perfume, or smell like ciggarette smoke...It is so bothersome to have to warn people and remind people. This puts so much more stress on me! What if it is a party where there will be kids and families you dont know well. Anyone else feel this way?

Sometimes it is just easier to stay home!!! How do you handle this?

It is stressful...but DD's worst colds were in spring and summer! Go figure! I don't worry about indoor pets because we have five cats and two dogs - never been advised to worry about pets! DD isn't allergic to animals - thank God.

I dread this season too, but not so much because of the interactions, just because Alyssa seems to get her first sickness around now and it just tends to drag on through the winter and we are always on alert and preparing for the possibility of a hospitalization. Summers are usually much better, I hate to see it go.

The change of season makes me sick in general.... I totally hear what you are saying, most of the things you mentioned annoy my lungs too. Air Freshers in people's houses as well as perfume/cologne are exceptionally hard for me to deal with.. Especially anything heavily scented really.

For me, I just leave, walk away or find a spot where I am less bothered... Mostly it is my asthma that flares up.. My mom's friend who is severely sensitive to smells and smoke etc, handled it in the best way I have ever seen. My mom who wears scented lotion was really giving her friend a hard time... My mom's friend explained to her what happens when that happens such as her throat closing up.. She even bought my mom unscented lotion for her to wear when they are together....

In my family they are very respectful of me.. My dad even as a grown up will kick anyone including a family member right out of his house if I am there and someone comes sick.. I am always embarrassed but when I lived there he was adamant but it did work.

Maybe whoever the hostess is going to be for whatever get together can be asked to remind guest of your children respiratory needs. I hate that you have to, but unfortunately most people do not get it unless they live it.

I know Lisa will chime in with stories about her inlaws, she always does and had good answers..

I'm actually happy as can be that winter is finally here. The rain and the humidity of summer time DESTROYS me like no other. It's so bad for me that I need to literally hide in the house 24/7 hugging the AC, or else my lungs freak out so badly that I cough myself into pulled muscles/bleeding.

It's not so bad tho when there's no humidity.. but this summer has been nothing BUT humidity here on the east coast. So yeah.

I mean getting sick and all from family gatherings can suck (I got the flu last christmas from my step mom, lol), but atleast I can TRY to go out and do stuff now without needing to 24/7 hug my nebulizer.

I'm more nervous when there's been a shortage of flu vaccine.

Then there are the holidays in which someone always shows up with "just a cold" and it turns out to be something much worse. But then that's happened throughout the year as well.

The fall/winter season is usually the hardest on me for picking up germs goes. As far as tolerating heat and breathing effort goes, summer is the worst in that respect. The humidity pretty much leaves me home bound and my O2 requirements seem to be higher on those days. I do get nervous this time of the year though, for several years now, excacerbations are inevitable and hospitalizations are pretty common for me. Maybe this year will be different though, I was really sick this summer, so maybe my body will behave for the fall....lol I am on IV's now, but at least I am home and I am not super sick.

I also get hyper vigilant as far as other people coughing, snotty noses, etc... goes and try to steer clear of them. It gets difficult if I am at someone else's home and a visitor comes in with cold symptoms though. I have actually left family functions early because of this. I continually have to drill it into some of my family members that even a simple cold can leave me very sick and in the hospital....one of them had the gall to bring his young son to my house sniffling and coughing a few weeks ago. I was so angry and he knew it. I don't care if I come across as being short tempered or b*tchy, it's my life they are messing with! I go through bottles of hand sanitizer during the fall/winter months....I use them in the spring/summer too, but the use of sanitizers goes up a few notches during those cootie months.
