I think sueing is a bit extreme. I also think they should jsut add a menorah. What's wrong with including the rest of us? We matter too.

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Julie, I know who you're gonna piss off with this topic! Good luck! </end quote></div>

Don't be a twit. Just because I'm Jewish doesn't make me the evil grinch.

The reason they gave for not just adding the Menorah is basically "where would it end"? If they add that, other religions will complain and threaten to sue and it would go on and on. They don't have the staff or time (especially this time of year) to accomodate everyone. It's silly (in my opinion) that they have to have a full time staff devoted to making sure no one in the world is offended by their own traditions. I completely understand that and therefore understand why they made the decision they did. I don't necessarily agree with it, but what else could they do? If they can't please everyone in the world, then they can't try to please anyone. I think it's sad, but the truth of the matter is, they'd have probably lost the law suit. I am all for everyone celebrating whatever they want in whatever way they want. I would in no way ever be offended by seeing a Menorah without a Christmas Tree in a public place. I guess I fail to understand why everyone can't just be happy and get along. But that's the way of the world these days. It's all about <b>ME</b> and what <b>I</b> want.

Renee, I agree with you that they did the right thing in this moment. They will "review" their policy for next year. Better to just do that then have a full blown federal lawsuit on their hands. However, I think it's rediculious that we have to fear lawsuits over this sort of thing. If you don't like it, don't look. If you want a menorah put up, approach them about doing it NEXT year!!! Don't make them scramble last minute. In my opinion they had better be protecting the airport from all things that could go wrong than arguing over this stupid crap.

And allie, there is NOTHING wrong with "including the rest of us". But nobody is excluding you. I don't see it written anywhere that christmast trees have a darn thing to do with any religion in particular. The menorah however, IS associated with a specific religion, and to get technical, inculding it would exclude whoever is NOT associated with that religion. I don't feel that way, but I could see it getting to that point. So just enjoy the freaking christmas trees people.

Here in WA we call them EVERGREEN TREES. We are the evergreen state afterall!

Imagine what could be done with all of the money used for holiday decorations - in December, or just about any month of the year!
I think that bringing greens into the home during the winter months is rooted in Pagan tradition, like many of the Christian observances.

I agree, a law suit is WAY over the top. I also agree that if you put up a menorah then it's possible that other groups may want to be included. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

As far as a Christmas tree not having anything to do with Christianity, I'm not so sure. Firstly, calling it a Christmas tree implies it has to do with Christmas which is a Christian holiday. Secondly, people tend to top their trees with angels or stars (and not the star of David) which also has Christian implications.

Now, if they simply put up holiday trees and decorated them in a secular fashion then I doubt anyone could legally take issue with them. I have several jewish friends that do just that. They like having a decorated tree to look at and cuddle up in front of.

Surprisingly enough 'christmas' does not just share it's roots with Christ's birth. Saturnalia, Natalis Solis Invicti, and Yule were all celebrated during the winter months usually surrounding the winter solstice (the Romans celebrated this day on December 25 due to calendar changes this date is different nowadays) Though usually they were in fact celebrating some god or many gods ironically enough at the same time. The Natalis Solis Invicti (Sol Invictus) allowed several solar deities to be worshipped at the same time. (Elah-Gabal, Syrian) (Sol, Roman) (Mithras, Persian), anyway the main theme was the sun (sol). Winter solstice = shortest daylight hours. They celebrated the fact that the sun was still all powerful remaining in the sky even though night was trying to reclaim it. Anyway catholics made the connection between the birth of christ and the rising sun "O, how wonderfully acted Providence that on that day on which that Sun was born . . . Christ should be born." Anyway around 354 did you know that Christians celebrated the birth of Christ on January 6th (Epiphany I think). So christmas wasn't actually 'christ'mas originally anyway. It was a day that sun gods were celebrated. And speaking of Romans did you know that Dionysus (sometimes seen as a deity that represents life and death) is shown holding a coniferous tree which itself has sometimes been represented as a celebration of the renewal of life.

Anyway I go with 'merry freaking everything' when I think of christmas.
