Asking the teacher

I'd definitely mention it to the teacher, or even the school nurse. We add that in our 504 plan to make sure somebody calls us if something is going around the school.

I believe we have something like that mentioned in the letter to the school/teacher that we sent along with a bunch of CF info and there's something in his 504 plan about adhering to the sick policies (sending kids home). We also got some info in the school newsletter about those polcicies in terms of H1N1.

We got spoiled with DS' preschool in which they'd tell us what was going around or call all of us if it was something more serious -- Influenza A when the vaccine didn't cover it and a case of Whooping Cough in another classroom.

I have asked that of all of my children's teachers every year since Luke was diagnosed and all of them have been great about it. I always try to be super cautious anyway, but I figure that it does not hurt to ask and I think it makes the teachers be even more vigilant in their classrooms about hand washing and sanitizing when they know the stakes are so much higher for us.
Angela, mom to 7, including Luke, 2 yrs. old w/cf

There is a child at Emily's school whose parents have arranged with the school for a special letter to be sent to all parents at the beginning of each school year. I just thought of this since we just got the letter in the mail today. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> It doesn't state her health condition but here it is:

<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>We are asking for your help on the behalf of one of our students & her family. She has a severe medical condition. It is possible that if she were to contract a certain illness it could become life-threatening.

After discussions with her family, school staff and other knowledgeable parties in the medical profession, it has been suggested that one of the ways to help provide a safer environment for her would be to enlist the support of her parents. You can help by ALWAYS telling us the reason your child is absent from school. When you call to let us know your child is absent, please share the specific illness that is keeping your child home. It is especially important for us to know if it is due to an illness that is highly contagious like the flu, chicken pox, strep throat, and pneumonia. If it is pneumonia, we need to know the type of pneumonia (community acquired, walking pneumonia or atypical mycoplasma pneumonia, etc.)

I wish to express sincere appreciation for your support and understanding of this potentially life-threatening situation.</end quote></div>
Emily's school is BIG- 500+ kids grades 3-5 and this is a tall order, but this is a medically fragile child. They asked me if I wanted a letter like this to go out on Emily's behalf and what I would want it to say. I told them that I would have to speak to her dr's but that she has a clinic appt soon. Since this existing letter asks for reporting flu, pneumonia & strep I think that likely covers her... her teachers already plan on letting me know if cases of these illnesses turn up. Since h1n1 turned up there have been school updates posted every few days. We got through a major outbreak at the middle school last year where my son is a student- I hope now that he was exposed and developed immunity without ever getting sick!!

Anyway, just wanted to share that letter for anyone that might find it of interest. I don't think it was for the child with CF but a letter like this could easily apply to one of our kids.
