asthma AND CF

I was also dx with Asthma before I was diagnosed with CF. I'm on advair to help control it, and also have a rescue inhaler, but don't need to use it too often. 1 doc classified it as "exercise induced asthma"...it really only presents itself during/after intense exercise in my case.

Emily has asthma- but it's not a separate dx; it's an inflammation component to her cf. It always acts up when she's sick (she gets a croupy, 'honking' cough, wheezing, shortness of breath and sometimes chest pain- but much less than she used to now that she's on an inhaled steroid.) She does now has a very slight (only a couple times a day, but it's consistently there) cough, but I don't know if that's due to her asthma/inflammation or if it's improved mucus clearance since being on the Pulmozyme.

I'm sorry the dr thinks Alyssa might have this going on. Do you see any of the wheezing, shortness of breath type symptoms when she is sick?

eta> Emily has only cultured staph.

Maggie does not have an asthma diagnosis but she does have inflammation due to her CF. She has been on Pulmicort nebs 2x day since she was 2 1/2 years old. She also is on Singulair chewable. I once tried to take her off the Singular several years ago and she started wheezing. Hope Alyssa's cough goes away soon.

Jordan was dx with asthma when he was 5. As you may know, he wasn't dx with CF until he was 15. His asthma usually causes him more trouble than his CF. The reason I feel I can say that is because I have asthma as well.

Quite often, Jordan & I will have breathing problems at the same time. This is because asthma is often aggravated by environmental conditions. Humidity, cold air, the wind blowing pollen around, or just walking into a store where there are strong scents can trigger an "asthma attack". You can feel the tightness in your chest even before others can see your symptoms.

When Jordan was little, I learned to watch his throat & stomach to monitor his breathing. If his throat was sucking in (significantly) & his stomach was pooching out when he inhaled, I knew he was starting to have problems. The small airways become very inflamed, and most of the air that goes in, goes into the stomach rather than the lungs.

After an asthma attack, I always have to burp a lot, because I took so much air into my stomach trying to get it into my lungs.
