Thanks all!!

I appreciate all the info!

We still have not decided if we are going to let them or not (or I should say my hubby has not decided because I am okay with it).

I appreciate it!

I do not have CF, but have had my belly button pierced for about 5 years now. I love it and would really miss it if it were gone, however in my experience it was NOTHING like having my ears pierced. Just a word of warning the procedure itself was slower than an earlobe and took way longer to feel normal again -- it was 3 months before I wasn't super sanative to it being there and about a full year before I could "forget" it was there.

My case may be the exception, the lady who did it was supposed to have had 20 years experience but she said I had the toughest belly skin she had ever worked with. She used a hollow needle and "scooped" out the whole -- someone else mentioned to me they got more of a "punch" like with ear lobes -- so all of that to say -- do some homework into how it is done and what to expect for healing time -- maybe I'm a rare case.

Good luck in the decision making processing :)

my daughter has her belly pierced and she has never had problems with it. And she gets metal allergies. We paint the metal she can't wear with clear nail polish, now she can wear anything.

I was nervous about her getting one in case of infection because i had heard some horror stories about them. But I also didnt want her trying to pierce it herself as I knew of other school kids who had done.
I took her to the place and asked alot of questions on hygeine and how to take care of it. The hardest thing was being made to wait in the waiting room while she went in the room alone with the lady. She said I couldnt go in for hygeine reasons. I told Kj to make sure she cleaned her belly with alcohol first and to make sure she took the needle out of a new pkt. Kayla had been to this lady b4 to get her nose pierced. So I knew she was good.

If your girls get it done, use peroxide to clean it, I made Kj do it 3 times a day and also clean the metal bar with peroxide each time a new one goes in. But don't get peroxide on the actual stone as it will fade the colour of the stone. Also Leave the original bar in for at least 6 weeks b4 changing it.

Kj's friends with out c/f had it done and they had alot of infections and Kj didnt get any. She has had hers done for almost 2 yrs now. She knows the importance of cleanliness because of getting port flushes every month.

Kj loves it and has many belly rings now <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

hey hey

i have had mine done since i was 12. i did it myself with a needle. when i was in 9th grade, my best friends dog ripped it out... painful. It took forever for it to be re-piercable because of the thickness of the scar tissue. i got it done again when i was 19. Had a piercer do it that time.

... Anyway, i have never had a problem with mine. But the main reason i am writing is because now i do piercings and have spent the last four years in a tattoo shop that does piercings, so i know a little about it....

Belly buttons take the longest to heal of all piercings. On average, total healing time is 4-6 months. And you can be almost garaunteed it will get slightly infected in the beginning. Nothing serious or to worry about, just a little uncomfortable, and another reason to keep it clean. Contrary to popular belief, the best way is NOT hydrogen peroxide. From a piercers stand point, hydrogen peroxide should only be used on earlobes. It's not harmful to the belly button, just not recommended. The best thing for all piercings is Dial anti bacterial soap. Any time i get a new piercing i have a little bottle i keep in my purse. Anytime it starts to hurt or itch, just go wash it with Dial and it should take care of it. Mine got infected when i got it done at 19, and i needed a little more than just Dial. (i don't think i went to a very reputable shop, but i was still young and uninformed). At that point the best thing to do is soak the piercing in water with sea salt. The sea salt will draw the infection out. It's gross, but it works.

As far as getting pregnant later, as long as you take it out prior to your belly getting big, it shouldn't leave a tremendous scar. If you leave it in through the pregnancy, it will. But if you remove it when you find out you're pregnant, it shouldn't scar, other than a little dot. It will probably close up. (People heal differently. i could leave mine out for years and a ring would still go through.) If it does though, it is re-doable... and it usually doesn't take 5 years for it to be so, unless of course a dog rips your skin off while tearing the ring out. (i just got lucky).

Your girls should be just fine. And, it's better than them asking for a tattoo, because piercings are never permanent. Just make sure you do research on shops in the area to find one that won't cause permanent damage.

i'm biased, though, i have 17 piercings all over the place...

You can get belly bars for when you are pregnant to keep the hole open. <img src="">

the lady who pierced kj told us to get peroxide. Why can you use it on ears but not the belly?

Kj's belly has never been infected.

Kj also used peroxide on her nose. That got infected alot and peroxide fixed it up. we used salt and water but that didnt work for her nose.

I have found a site on piercing after care,

They don't suggest peroxide either, so I dunno lol<img src="">

I edited to say I found out why <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

<b>"DON'T use Methylated Spirits, or alcohol on the piercing as they are very astringent and can damage the wound, don't use Hydrogen peroxide or Betadine because they destroy the cells that form scar tissue, Don't use creams or ointments as they keep the wound moist and hamper the healing process."</b>

But it still worked well for Kj and we had No hassles with her belly at all using peroxide.

Hey ,
I've had my bellybutton peirced since I was about 12...I never had any problems with it at all..no infection or anything but if your girls get on they should be very careful and take good care of it...only use high quality rings, and use lots of polysporn while it is healing.

Hope you decide whether to let them or not!!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

I went to have mine done and they said I didn't have enough skin to pierce it. However I've had several other peircings and they turned out fine.

I have mine pierce. I got it a few months after I turned 18. I did get an infection but I learned later that I'm allergic to the nickel in stainless steel, if I had worn a gold ring it would have been fine. I recommend starting with a ring instead of a barbell because they can turn it all the way around when they clean it which means they'll get the entire ring cleaned. They can also put some neosprin on it for the first week. It does take about 6 months to fully heal.
