I used to take bc, but when I began having issues with my gallbladder, I was immediately taken off. So, just something to think about - there is some correlation with gallbladder troubles and cystics tend to be at greater risk for that already. Another thing to think about - bc affects calcium absorption (and not in a good way), which can also be problematic for cystics. I know that's not really what you were asking, and I don't have a ton of statistics and junk right at the moment to back up what I just said, but I wanted to mention it so that folks who are considering bc can look into those possible side-effects. Also, you may want to PM Momtana - she has a lot of knowledge on this subject <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

hi, all. I work in a family planning clinic and have been researching methods of contraception for women with CF for the past few years (well, since I knew I had CF) - I still have lots of questions. The contraception community currently does not believe that antiobiotic use interferes with the effectiveness of hormonal methods - particularly the pill. EXCEPT Rifampin (which we may use) and a few other meds. However, there are some other concerns I have (and that I hope someone researches) about the use of hormonal contraception for women with CF. The other thing that the contraceptive community has re-evaluated is the use of Intrauterine Contraception - thumbs up for that method for most women now and I think it is a pretty darn good choice for CFers. Paragard, the copper IUD 1) is highly effective 2) can be in place up to 10 years and 3)has no hormones. It can increase cramping/bleeding with periods so if this is a problem for you already you can choose Mirena Intrauterine Contraception - it has progestin in it which reduces bleeding/cramping.
I wrote an article for CF Round Table on contraception and CF - if you want me to send it to you, send a PM with your email address.

i've been on bc since i was a junior in high school. luckily i never got pregnant while on antibiotics. i know its a proven fact that abx lessens the effect of bc, but i think it also just has to do with the person. i think i would have wound up pregnant a long time ago because i never used a back up method.

i was off bc for 10 mths before getting pregnant with morgan.

i thought about getting mirena too, but i just stuck to bc pills because i couldn't afford mirena at the time. my doctors office makes you pay for it upfront then you have to get your insurance to reimburse you.
