Blood works was very bad today!

I remember how my heart strings were ripped to shreds when my 12-month old had to go for his first blood draw (for lead). They were just digging and digging around in his arm because they couldn't get the sample and he's looking at me with his red teary eyes like, 'mommy, why are you letting her do that to me?' It's so hard because they don't understand yet.

So basically, I'm sorry you had a rough day today <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> It's hard to watch your kids go through that sort of thing. I always try to remember that it's for their health and tests are important.

Next time ask for a different tech. 45 minutes is WAY too long to work on a blood draw. The more your child screams, the harder it gets to find a good vein. Top that with a tech who is getting edgy, and it is not a good mix. My thoughts....three pokes, you're out. Bring us someone new.
Always make sure they are using a butterfly, and ask your doc next time you see him/her for a prescription for EMLA cream. That way you have it on hand and can apply it yourself when you know you are within a half an hour of a blood draw.

I was just going to say that 45 minutes is WAY too long for a blood draw on anyone much less an infant! I use to work as a phleb and we had protocols as far as kiddos went. We did use Emla cream which helped tremendously and we weren't allowed to stick anyone more than twice. If one tech missed twice, another one had to be called in (with more experience).
I hope that the next draw goes smoother for him. I am glad that clinic was good though. Hugs, Jenn

exactly the same happend to me, she cry so much that she vomit all the mocus. 3 nurses and they coudnt, until they did it in her hand.
it was terrible, and i cry and cry and cry after while i was driving home.
but i learn the lesson, after i have to take her blood, so i get to the clinic like Billy the kid and said: "i need the best nurse, if you don´t have here i will go to other place." 5 minutes they last.
