During my last Hospitalization my doctor talked to me about Reclast as an I.V drip drug for the health and developement of my bones, as we know are more vunerable to fratures and breaks cause of malabsorption of calcium and other vit essential to bone growth, especially as we get older.
I was a perfect candidate for the drug and I went ahead and thad it administered . It took 15 min to administer the drug and everything felt right for the rest of the day. In otherwards no side effects until 48 hrs later. The doctors downplayed the side effects to me . I felt like crap for 4 or 5 days.
Well I just wanted to mention to my peers that the side effects to the drug are flu like symptoms including fevers, nausea, and several others. The benefit outwayed the risks. Im writing to let others know that the symptoms came 48 hr later, and lasted for 4 or 5 days. My symptoms were, Flu like symptoms, high fever the first night and low grade for 4 days after, upchucking for two mornings 48 hrs after the drug and other than that Im hoping the benefits will outway my yucky 5 days. I would recommend tylenol and perhaps some sort of nausea drug. Remember these are just suggestions to ask your doctor about if Reclast is introduced someday. The internet has lots of info on Reclast which was helpful. Im looking forward to stronger bones and less fractures. I hope this helps. I guess Reclast can be done outpatient so be sure to ask about insurance coverage.

Reclast is a drug that has only been around for 3 yrs but lots of studies and research done which includes CF patients. Just be sure to be well informed about the drug before going ahead with it. All in all it worked out good. Im over the symptoms and feel strong again.

luckily there will be a good alternative to reclast on the market very soon.

not IV, but rather sub cu. and it won't impact the kidneys.... it should serve the CF population pretty well

I take Reclast. I used Forteo for 2 yrs (which is sub cu). Forteo build my bones back up. I went from severe osteoporosis to osteopenia. I handle Reclast very well. I do have the bone pain/flu like symptoms from the Reclast. I usually begin to feel the effects 10 hrs after administration. I took Tylenol before the administration. When that wears off I take pain medicine (half a Darvacet works for me) before the 10 hrs were up. I keep up the Darvacet every 8 hrs for the next 4 days if needed. I think it's great something is just once a year. I was required to do something after Forteo, to keep the bone loss from starting again. I am unable to take the pills because of the side effects were so harsh on me. They even adminster the Reclast through my port. I've never had big kidney problems, but I do make sure to get lots of fluid after taking the Reclast.

my doctor prescribes 600mg ibuprofen or a dose of steroids prior to taking a biphosphonate. This helps with the fever and flu like symptoms if you do somewhat of a preemptive strike. That is for the 1x/month dose of Boniva or other meds. I have terrible side effects from those meds and have not tried this new suggestion for reasons I won't bore you all with; but, I think that would help.
