Hi there, first of all good for you breastfeeding. It is the best thing for your child.

We have had a simular situation with our daughter. She had a hard time gaining weight and the doctors were really, really pushing me to stop nursing. I think if I had not been so absolutely sure that this was the best thing for my child and I was going to make it work no matter how hard, I would have caved to the pressure.

From experience in checking formula's out with our other kids, I knew that the formula's were very expensive and it was likely hard to find the right match. God made the right match with mother's milk. Now, with cf it is definately a bit of a challenge and then if you add allergies.....it is a lot more complicated. This is coming from a mom of a cf child with multiple food allergies (milk, egg, corn, soy, wheat, barley, oats, beef, almonds, pork to name a few) Not with ease, but it can be done.

As far as the weight gain, it could be the allergies causing the food to not be absorbed as well. You could try cutting out milk in your diet for 2 weeks and see if it helps any. If you talk to the right dr. they will be able to help you through the process of figuring out the allergies.

We did use polycose and mct with every feed for the first 6 months or so. I was not willing to quit nursing just because there were not enough calories. So, I syringed the polycose and mct oil with a little breastmilk (to mix it up) and added about 21 calories per feeding. That doesn't sound like that much, but when breastmilk is about 20 cal./oz that would bring it up to 25 cal/oz. It worked, it was a HUGE pain to mix the concotion and feed, after giving the enzmes. I missed the whole spontanious nursing that I experienced with our other children, but...I loved nursing and knew I had given our child a really good start.

Almost 2 years later, with still lots of up's and down's we are making it. I just finished nursing and despite the trials of it in reguard to weight gain/cf it was such an awesome experience and I am glad that I didn't let the dr.'s or anyone else talk me out of one of the best experiences ever. I recently had another cf dr (not from our clinic ) tell me that I gave our child a great start and that breastmilk is one of the best things for cf kids. Not to offend those that did not nurse, there are times when it is just not possible/desirable but that doesn't change the fact that it is the best thing. Keep holding your ground. PM me if you want, I will help in anyway I can.

I have not been in your position but I do breastfeed a child with cf. He is now 22 mos and will still nurse as long as we can. I was also told breastmilk is best here in Oakland CA, especially for a little cf'er. If there is anyway you can continue I believe you should.

I have read about moms who went on an allergy free diet and have successfully continued nursing their babes. I hope you can find resources locally, La Leche league for allergy free nursing?, but check out the resourses online as well.

Good luck!! We'll be rooting for Parker and you!!!

Thank you ladies for your responses!

I'm thinking now that I need to take him to an allergy specialist to find out what it is he is allergic to.
Sarah - thank you for the link . . . I've been trying to read everything on the site
Tiffany - did your daughter have problems from the start? The only thing that I was concerned about was that he gained weight really well at first and now it has stopped. Can they develop the food allergies? Also, do you remember how much mct oil you were giving her? What is polycose?
Sorry so many questions. I (obviously) just want to try everything and not give up breastfeeding!
Also, he just had a fecal fat done and there was no fat malabsorbtion but may have been malabsorbing carbs.

If you think he is allergic to cow's milk have you tried removing it from your diet??? I wouldn't stop breastfeeding if i were you but i would consider removing all dairy from my diet to see if that helped at all. Hang in there! I know how tough this is. Also congratualtions for breastfeeding. Your little one is lucky and i believe he will benefit from the breastmilk in his diet even if you end up having to supplement!
